Kira gaped at him in silence.
Did he just call her stupid?
‘Come on.” He held her wrist and started walking.
“Hey!” Kira struggled. ‘What are you doing? Let go of me!*
He couldn’t just drag her around like she was a mannequin.
Kira dug her heels in. ‘I’m not going anywhere with you!”
Austyn shot her a look. ‘If you keep talking, I’m going to find something else for your mouth to do.”
His gaze flicked to her lips.
Then he added, in case she wasn’t comprehending, French style.”
Kira felt heat rushing to her cheeks.
Damian was standing right behind her!
How could Austyn say something like that in public, in front of his friend!
Afraid he might actually carry out his threat, Kira quickened her pace.
Damian shook his head at the couple.
After so many years, Austyn still hadn’t figured out that the fairer sex required a gentle touch.
He couldn’t treat them, especially the ones he cared about, like employees.
Luca, done with his clay pigeon shooting, came over. ‘Austyn, are you and Kira not having dinner with us? I already booked the dining room here.”
Austyn didn’t reply..
Kira’s eyes lit up at the word ‘dinner.”
She tried to prise his hand off her wrist. ‘I’m starving! We should eat first.”
He ignored her and kept on walking, keeping his grip on her wrist.
Kira gnashed her teeth and pulled a face behind the man.
If only she had the strength of She–Hulk…
–
Austyn ran the air con inside the Hummer at full blast.
Cold air circulated inside the car, taking away the heat from Kira’s face.
She leaned back in the seat and closed her eyes, sighing in contentment.
Austyn rooted around in the glove box and frowned when he couldn’t find any sunscreen.
He glanced at Kira’s face, slightly sunburned. ‘Why didn’t you ask Damian to take you to an indoor shooting range?‘
Kira said without opening her eyes. “I didn’t know there was an indoor range.
“You could have chosen a shady spot out there.‘
“Damian’s a qualified instructor. He knows what he’s doing. He chose the spot for a reason. Who am I to object?”
“You trust him that much?” Austyn leaned in.
Kira shrugged. ‘It’s not about trust. He’s the expert. I’m a novice. Of course I should listen to him.‘
She shifted in her seat.
Austyn’s hot breath was on her face.
Sensing the man was getting angry, though she wasn’t sure what for, Kira changed the subject. ‘Speaking of Damian what does he do for a living?
“You’re interested in him?”
Kira nodded. ‘He seems like an interesting person.‘
Austyn sneered. “You won’t think that once you know what he does.”
“So what does he do?”
“He’s a killer. He knows how to take a man’s life, with or without weapons. And he’s done it many, many times before.”
Kira’s eyes shot open. ‘You’re joking, right?”
‘Ask him if you don’t believe me.‘
‘But he looked so…”
‘So what?”
‘So…I don’t know, so honest, I guess. Like an upstanding citizen. The kind who helps an old lady cross the street. He doesn’t look like a ruthless killer at all.‘
‘Appearances can be deceiving, Austyn crossed his arms. ‘He’s made many an enemy in his line of work. If you don’t want to be mistaken for his associate, you better keep your distance from him.‘
Kira studied his face.
Was the man being serious?
