Austyn didn’t reply.
“Thank you,” she said, grateful.
The man never bothered to explain himself, even when he was doing something nice for others.
Kira sat back and closed her eyes
The quiet hum of the air con was interrupted by a loud growling.
Kira clutched at her stomach, embarrassed.
Lunch was more than four hours ago,
Austyn hid a smile. ‘Dinner?‘
“Yes, please!‘ Kira nodded eagerly.
He was about to start the engine when his phone rang.
‘Hello.‘ Austyn answered the phone.
He removed a bottle of mineral water from the glove box and handed it to Kira.
She took it and mouthed a ‘thank you.‘
‘Did you find your treasure?‘ Austyn asked, remembering what Gideon told him when they met in Farindon.
Gideon chuckled. ‘Not yet, but I’m getting close. I’ll be free in a couple of days. Let’s meet up.”
‘Sure. Dinner’s on me. When exactly?”
‘I’ll let you know once I’m free.”
“Okay”
Gideon paused.
“Is there something else?”
“Yes.”
Austyn waited.
“You know why I’ve come to Stamford, Gideon said after a while. ‘I’ve run into a bit of a snag in my search. Since this
your city, I may have to trouble you to use your connections when the time comes.‘
His Soft Spot
‘Sure, that’s not a probl-
“Ah!‘ Kira cried out.
Austyn turned his head.
Kira had spilt water on her t–shirt.
Scowling, he took the bottle from her.
‘Sorry, it was an accident.” She said sheepishly.
‘Klutz.‘ Austyn searched the glovebox.
Kai ken
He knew Kai kept tissue paper somewhere in the car, but he didn’t find it.
‘Don’t you girls always carry tissue in your purse?‘
“Hey, that’s a stereotype!‘
“Well, do you?‘
Kira pulled a face. ‘I do, actually.”
‘Get it.‘
‘My bag’s in Captain O’Neill’s car.”
‘Use your sleeves then.”
Kira rolled her eyes. ‘I know how to take care of a simple spill. By the way, you’re still on the phone.”
Austyn realised the call was still connected.
He cleared his throat. ‘Anyway, call me when you’re free. If you need anything, just say the word.”
Gideon didn’t hear what Austyn said.
The girl’s voice on the other end of the line sounded familiar.
For a moment, he thought it was Kira.
It was the same kind of voice Kira used when she knew she was in the wrong but refused to admit it.
Like when she couldn’t finish her homework in time because she spent all night binge–watching a teen drama.
She would come to him in the morning, homework in hand, and blink those big, round, liquid eyes at him. “Gideon, I don’t know how to do Question Two. Could you help me?*
When Gideon helped her solve Question Two, she would offer an ingratiating smile and say, ‘And Question Three,‘
And then it was Question Four, followed by Five, Six…
Soon, Gideon was finishing the entire set of homework problems for her.
He knew she was faking it she could do those questions in her sleep.
And she knew he knew.
But she also knew he could never say no to her when she begged him in her soft, sweet, schoolgirl voice,
He would give her anything she wanted.
Kira was his soft spot.
