Kira froze.
Was that really his voice?
She hadn’t seen the man for three days.
What was he doing here?
The rifle was snatched away from her.
‘Hey!‘ Kira whipped around and looked up into Austyn’s eyes.
The sun was on his back.
The golden rays it cast made him look like he was glowing-
Kira stepped back and stood next to Glana.
Austyn furrowed his brows.
Why was she running away from him?
He held up the rifle and inspected it.
‘Don’t worry,‘ Luca said. ‘It’s not loaded.”
He wouldn’t be so stupid as to let two novices play with a loaded gun.
They would end up either shooting themselves in the foot, or worse, him.
Austyn tossed the rifle back to him, single–handed.
Luca caught it.
Without looking at Kira, Austyn pulled out a chair and sat down.
Then he whipped out a pair of sunglasses and put them on.
Standing to the side, Kira stuck out her tongue at the mari.
He could act aloof.
So could she.
Then she threw a look at the captain.
“Didn’t you say Damian wanted to see me?‘ she said with her eyes. “What is Austyn doing here?”
Luca offered an apologetic shrug.
The girl had very expressive eyes.
He read the accusation in them loud and clear.
Would she believe him if he said he had nothing to do with Austyn being here?
Damian was greeted by a tableau when he arrived.
All four of them–two men, two women–were seated under the parasol, each occupying a chair.
No one moved; no one said a word.
No one seemed to be blinking.
Damian cocked an eyebrow. “What’s this? You guys playing the quiet game?
Luca sprang to life. ‘Damian, I brought Kira here as you instructed. My job’s done here. Now I’m going to shoot some pigeons. Bye.”
He took off without a backward glance.
Austyn was reclining in a chair, eyes shielded by sunglasses.
Kira stood up. “Uh, Mr Matthews, Captain O’Neill said you wanted to see me.‘
‘Please, call me Damian.”
Damian shook hands with Kira, ignoring a glare from someone.
He nodded a greeting at Giana.
“We didn’t get a chance to talk last time,” he said to Kira. ‘So I thought of asking you here today, to get to know you better. Are you free later? We should have dinner tonight.!
‘Um, sure, I guess.‘
A snort came from the chair nearby.
Kira took no notice of it.
Smiling sweetly at Damian, she said, ‘My friend and I would like to learn how to shoot. Could you teach us some basics?
A louder snort from the chair.
Damian returned the smile. ‘Sure. Let’s go.
go.”
‘I’ll just stay here for a while longer if you don’t mind,‘ Giana said.
“Are you sure?‘ Kira asked. ‘You were so excited to learn about guns just now.”
‘I’m sure. You guys go ahead.‘
“Okay.”
