Betrayal At The Altar (Rachel and David) novel Chapter 853

Chapter 853

Rachel Grey did not overthink it and asked casually. “Is Grandpa asleep?”

“Yes, he’s asleep” Mr. Chadwick said, “Mr. Johnson went fishing with a friend today. He was exhausted after a long day”

Rachel nodded. Just as she was about to go upstairs, she saw Arthur walking out with Lucas “Why are you back?” she asked. in surprise.

“I’m back to discuss the wedding.” Lucas walked over and signaled at her “Shall we go out for a chat?”

Rachel raised her eyebrows slightly. “Do you have anything to drink?”

Lucas pursed his lips and walked towards the wine cellar. “Let’s go.”

The two arrived at the wine cellar.

They sat on a leather sofa under the bright crystal lights that echoed with the expensive wine cabinets around them, the extravagant cellar was decorated and well-stocked.

Rachel dropped some ice cubes into her brandy and swirled the glass lightly. The ice cubes clinked against the glass wall, emitting a crisp, cracking sound. “Have you taken care of Hans Grey?” she asked.

She did not know if Hans would let it go, but Rachel understood Lucas too well. He would not let Hans off easily.

Therefore, she guessed that Lucas wanted to talk about Hans Grey.

However, he looked solemn tonight, as if something weighed on his mind.

Lucas’s dark eyes glanced at Rachel intensely when he heard her question.

Then he took out a cigarette from his pocket and lit it. The nicotine gave him temporary relief and eased him off his weary

mind

“You’ll read in the news tomorrow morning that the Grey family has declared bankruptcy due to debt problems,” Lucas announced.

He stared at Rachel without blinking, fearing that he would miss the subtle changes on her face.

However, Rachel looked indifferent to the information, as if Hans Grey was merely a dispensable passerby in her life.

Rachel took a sip of brandy and rested the glass on the table, making a slight sound. “So, the person leaving in the car just now was Hans Grey?” she asked knowingly in an icy tone.

Lucas lowered his eyes and did not look at her. “Yes!”

Rachel’s eyes flickered slightly, and her lips curled into a meaningful smile. “Looks like his wishful thinking didn’t work out. Instead, he stepped straight into Grandpa’s minefield”

The Grey family would have been safe and sound if Hans had not treaded into Arthur Johnson’s minefield.

Lucas did not utter a word; he finished the brandy in his glass instead.

After a long pause, he said, “Rae-Rae, I don’t know how much feeling you have left for Hans Grey over the years, but he is someone who will do anything to achieve his goals. He will only harm you if you let him roam freely.”

“I know, Rachel said admittedly. It was a fact she could not deny.

She thought of the sufferings she had endured all these years.

Since Hans chose to believe Lily Grey’s and her mother’s words, Rachel had utterly given up on her father.

Since they did not have deep feelings for each other, how could they not bear to part with each other?

If she did not ascertain that she was Hans’s biological daughter, she would have suspected he had an inexplicable intense, deep-seated hatred toward her for some unknown reason.

Otherwise, why did he not believe her back then and abandoned her in the snow?

In her opinion, Hans only had himself to blame for his current ordeal.

He could have lived the rest of his life comfortably on the Grey family’s wealth if he was not so greedy.

However, Rachel was curious how Hans had angered her grandfather so much to lead the elderly man to uproot the Grey family against his late daughter’s dying wish.

Rachel practically grew up with Lucas since she came to the Johnson family,

They were inseparable; Luras used to follow Rachel everywhere she went. As such, there was an unbreakable bond between

the two.

They would know each other’s thoughts with a mere glance.

At this moment, Lucas knew what was on Rachel’s mind when he saw her in deep thought.

He lowered his eyes so she could not see his emotions. He said calmly, “Hans Grey wanted to make a deal with the Johnson family in which he claimed you were involved. In return, he requested the Johnson family to protect his current wealth and

status.”

“Grandpa spent time with him alone after I brought him back to the mansion. I was not privy to their discussion, but my instinct told me Hans must have angered the old man.”

Otherwise. Arthur would not be in such a rage to go against his daughter’s dying wish.

The Johnson family had been less than lukewarm to the Grey family all these years as if it did not care about the shameful things Hans had done. However, the men in the Johnson family had always held a grudge against him.

Arthur had held back in the past because he could not bear to go against his daughter’s wish before she passed.

Hans must have struck a raw nerve in Arthur to make him break his promise in a fit of anger.
