"If you are well-behaved, I might welcome you into the estate so you can see Agnes. As long as you don’t distract her from caring for my wife, you are welcome," Xavier offered.
"No, no, no," Isaac declined the offer. He knew what Xavier was doing. "Don’t think you can trap me like that. I was only having a small conversation with her so whatever plans you started, don’t think about it.
"What plans?" Xavier asked, playing innocent. "If you assumed I would have you two be together then you are wrong. There is someone more suited for her than a man like you."
Isaac stopped walking and grabbed Xavier’s arm. "What do you mean by a man like me? What is wrong with me?"
Isaac thought he made a wonderful match. He was kind and solved many of the deaths around the kingdom which meant he kept the town safe, he lived a quiet life which meant he might be a little busy but he was a good man.
"Don’t make me say it," Xavier said, saving Isaac from hearing the harsh truth.
"Of all the times you don’t want to speak to me now you choose this moment. Tell me what it is. Why would you set her up to be courted by someone else but not me? What have I shown you over the years that you think I am not suited for her?" Isaac asked.
Xavier took a page out of Harold’s book so as not to show any emotion. Had he known getting Isaac this riled up over a woman would be so fun he would have done it long ago.
"Speak! If you want to get me to agree to work for you, speak now," Isaac urged Xavier.
"We already agreed you would work with me. I can see this is causing you some stress so I will keep it to myself. It is not like you had any interest in her so why are you getting worked up? Someone else who does fancy her should get the chance. You’ve been holding on quite long," Xavier said, peering down at where Isaac held him. "Move it."
Isaac let go of Xavier’s hand. "Now the real you starts to show. I am curious since you consider me to be a friend. If I did have some interest in her but there was also someone else who wanted to be with her, who would you suggest to her?"
"No one. Why were you so foolish to think I would get involved in that? She would pick who she wants by herself. I have somewhere to be so for how much longer will you make a fuss about this? It is entertaining but you did pick the wrong time," said Xavier.
If Isaac could panic like this another time for Xavier to enjoy every bit of it that would be wonderful.
"You, you were trying to upset me from the beginning," Isaac realised. This was all the more reason he shouldn’t come to the estate anymore. "If I could, I would get rid of you so I don’t have to put up with this."
"Careful with what you say. I like you but that doesn’t mean I won’t kill you if you threaten me. Be smart, Isaac. Today you were disappointing," Xavier said, walking ahead of Isaac to leave.
It was going to take a while to find his aunt. His family no longer showing up at his gates meant they had finally listened to his warnings of killing them but it also meant they were somewhere plotting.
Camilla couldn’t be staying with Josephine and Nathaniel so Xavier first had to try one of the family homes.
"Come to me when you find something worth sharing. See my guest out for me, Harold," Xavier said as he walked by Harold.
"Thank you," Isaac took the glass of water from Harold. He drowned it in one go. Now, he would rather it be something strong to help him relax after speaking to Xavier. "Would you be so kind as to have a strong drink for me each time I come to visit? That is the only way I might survive here."
Camilla groaned, annoyed by Xavier’s presence. "Why are you here? Go," she pushed away the man she let use up some of her time. "What about your poor eyes? I am dressed." ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm
