The next day, Josephine arrived at the estate looking forward to her time with Selene. She couldn’t remember the last day she had sat and held a proper conversation with Selene. She was in desperate need of a distraction from all the drama which she found herself in thanks to Nathaniel.
"Go away," Xavier said, attempting to close the front door.
Josephine placed her foot so the door wouldn’t close. "Xavier Blackthorn, you stop this right now. Don’t make me have to scream."
It was a small challenge between the two with one trying to close the door and the other trying to keep it open.
"I am not here to see you. I have come to see Selene. She already knew that I was coming so let me in. If she is sleeping, I will scream and wake her," Josephine threatened.
She had not come all this way just to return home.
Xavier let go of the door, allowing his mother to open it. "I know. I was only toying with you and buying her some time to get dressed. She is a little late."
Josephine glared at Xavier. "How could she be late when it is her home? I can wait for her. I would have liked it if you were away so you wouldn’t trouble us. I am not here to bother her. I must get to know Selene."
"You already know her. You have been around her family in the past. Not much has changed other than many pests bothering her," Xavier replied.
"That was when she was younger. She has grown to be a woman now and she has faced many challenges so she would be different now. I didn’t know you had noticed how she was when she was younger. Honestly, how long have the two of you been close?" Josephine wondered.
"It’s none of your concern, mother. Don’t ask Selene about it since according to her, we weren’t friends then. Selene baked a lot of pies because Morgana was here-"
’The princess? Why would she come here?" Josephine asked.
"Well, if someone wasn’t going around suggesting that I marry the princess and filling her head with nonsense, I wouldn’t need to be concerned about her coming here. The next time she comes and I am home, she will not walk out of here," said Xavier.
Josephine wanted to say that he couldn’t harm the princess but if it had been one of Nathaniel’s old lovers sneaking into her home, she would do the same.
"I will apologise on behalf of your father," said Josephine.
"We’ve been through this mother. Apologising in place of him means nothing to me. He will continue to do as he likes not caring about my opinion or how I would be affected. I don’t want his name mentioned to Selene," Xavier said, wanting to give her a break. freeweɓnøvel.com
"I will not," Josephine promised. "I truly did come here to get to know her. Has she been around the town to meet with other women instead of spending all her days here?"
"She meets with a friend she made recently," Xavier answered.
Josephine touched Xavier’s arm and stopped walking so she could have a word with him before seeing Selene. "Truthfully, I heard about what Vivienne has done with the women warned to not meet with Selene. I have even heard the jokes that she should meet with the humans since she is so familiar with them."
