Xavier returned to the room after sending Michael off to find Agnes standing outside with paper in her hands. "What are you waiting for out here?"
"Selene received a letter from someone. She wanted the paper to send a response back, but when I went back inside, she was crying. I couldn’t get her to answer me, so I came out here to give her a moment alone. I am sorry if I did wrong," Agnes apologised.
Xavier opened the door to a quiet room. He found Selene sitting on the bed. "What made you cry?"
"These letters," Selene replied, sitting on the bed with the letters still in her hands.
Selene read them twice so she would fully grasp everything.
"It is a letter from my family. A few pages from each one of them. They apologised for not telling me about my healing and the Everharts. They wished they had done better to protect me," Selene said, holding out the letters to Xavier.
"My father had asked my uncle to take care of me and my mother if anything were to happen to me. The Harrisons were to be there at my side, but they broke the promise to my father. And grandfather, he thought I was happily married," Selene shared.
Based on what was written in all the letters, they all felt like they had failed her. That was not the case for Selene.
Her family always lived a quiet life until the palace disturbed them. Selene was finally able to hear all of her family’s side of what happened to reach this point, and was happy to hear from them that they were innocent of what they were accused of.
The sad part was that she could not share the letters with anyone to prove their innocence. There were many secrets all through the letters, and Selene knew the town wouldn’t believe her.
"My mother thinks she has cursed me with this talent since I will have to hide it forever. I don’t feel that way, and I must write to let her know. She gave me a way to wake my father and heal my family if needed. I don’t want her to be sad," said Selene.
Selene watched as Xavier started to read the letters. "Who was it that left the envelope outside?"
"I don’t know. I am the one who needed to arrange it, but I did order the guards not to attack your grandfather. I gave them a good description of him, and it seemed to have worked. It is that or your grandfather is quite sneaky," said Xavier.
"I know I said that I could wait, but seeing their handwriting and reading how they are makes me want to see them soon. I can hold out a little more to keep them safe, but this isn’t easy. Have you heard of any Everharts in town?" Selene asked, curious if her other family was here or if it was just a guess.
"They wouldn’t show themselves to get the attention of the palace on them. If your grandfather is concerned, then they must be here. I have a feeling good things will come once the king is changed and the court is shaken up. Just wait a little, and I will bring them to you," Xavier promised.
"In the meantime, you should write to them. You have forgotten Agnes outside," Xavier said, hoping Agnes’s presence could cheer up Selene a bit.
Selene wiped her eyes. "How could I be so careless?" She asked herself, getting up to go to the door. "I offered to help her find a dress for her time with Isaac."
Xavier frowned, put off by what Selene shared. "Her time with Isaac? Since when does she have time for Isaac? When did that scared brute have time to ask her anywhere?"
