Chapter 0065
Caroline’s POV:
William remained silent after we set off. He seemed like falling into some kind of memory. My body ached with the angry bruises that were surely forming on my arms and legs. Even in the safety of William’s car, my heart still pounded a mile a minute, reeling from everything that had happened.
The cold kiss of a knife was still felt against my face, but things would have ended so much worse had William not saved me in the nick of time. It also didn’t change the terrifying fact that Sophia was trying to kill me. I was lucky to have survived, but what if another attempt on my life was made?
Despite the very real danger I had just escaped, I couldn’t bring my derailing thoughts away from William’s strange behavior.
The words “our home” rang in my head like the toll of a church bell. Did William really think that his villa was still a home to me? The home I knew had been callously destroyed by William the day he brought home Sophia. With that painful reminder ever present, I didn’t know if I could ever accept that place as my home again.
“What about Sophia?” I broke the peace, trying to look for the panic in his eyes.
“What? Sophia?” he inquired, as if he just came to himself.
“Isn’t she in your villa?” I questioned with confusion.
“Don’t worry about it right now.” he said, rushing off the question with a shrug.
“What do you mean- ” Before I asked more, he suddenly interrupted me, his worry visible in his gaze.
“How are your injuries?” he inquired, his eyes fixed on an ugly bruise on my collar bone. His normally hard features were relaxed into a soft expression. Was that care I saw in his face?
“They hurt, but I’ve had worse,” I brushed off easily. There was nothing that could beat the torturous pain of stomach cancer, after all. “I’ll be fine.”
William reluctantly accepted my answer. “You look tired,” he noted.
“Caring for me now, are you?” I asked, a humorless laugh in my voice. In truth, I was utterly exhausted. Everything ached and I struggled to even keep my eyes open.
William didn’t find the situation to be as humorous as I did. “Get some sleep, alright?” he suggested. “You’re going to need the rest.” Was I imagining the worry in his voice?
But if Sophia was going to be at the house, I would need all the rest I could get, Eventually she would have to face the consequences of her own abhorrent actions once all the evidence piled
up against her. For now, however, I just had to pray she wouldn’t go nuts the moment she saw

I let my eyes slip shut, allowing myself to gradually be carried off to sleep by the gentle music playing from the radio. I didn’t let the frightening unknowns of the future disturb me, for I simply didn’t have the energy to think about them anymore.
Time seemed to pass by in a snap, and I was gently shaken out of my sleep by William. I just barely lifted my groggy head before William carefully lifted me out of the car bridal style to keep me off my injured ankle. “Don’t worry, I’ve got you,” he murmured, carrying me to the door with arms that held a suspicious tremble.
His behavior was shocking, but my suspicion of his true intentions remained. His kind actions always seemed to be part of some dishonest mask. No matter how good he was to me in the past, as soon as he didn’t get what he wanted, he snatched his kindness away. I refused to believe he would change his toxic attitude now.
