Caroline’s POV: 

To find out that William had broken it off with Sophia (the woman he had cheated on me with and ended our marriage over) so quickly made my head spin. Was she not lovable enough for him? Had William come to my rescue just so I could be a cheap replacement for his disappointing bride? 

I was sure that in the days to come, William would find some petty reason to toss me out like garbage and coax Sophia back into his selfish web of lies. William may have been a billionaire, but his love was cheap. 

I now knew (all too late unfortunately) that when William loved someone, that person became his everything; the one he loved and adored above all else. Then, when he inevitably grew bored of his current plaything, he would callously abandon them with little hesitation. 

Even as William stood firm in the middle of the entryway glaring daggers at Sophia, he still kept me tucked close to his chest. My eyes curiously flitted between the two during their tense back and forth, both disinterested and yet needing to know what came next for the two double 

-crossers. 

Sophia’s fair features were tainted with uncontrolled anger, jealousy, and an unwillingness to budge from her condition. William, on the other hand… Well, I searched for even a trace of reluctance on his face, but with me held so close to his broad chest, I could see nothing outside of his sharp jawline and light stubble. 

Tension was thick in the air as William stared Sophia down and Sophia stubbornly held her ground. Finally, William spoke, a distinct softness to his usually firm voice. 

“Alright, I’ll look after George,” he agreed, though there was some hesitance to his tone. ” Now get out of my house. I don’t want to see you here again unless I allow it.” 

There was no longer any resistance in Sophia’s gaze. She slowly stepped away, her piercing gaze weighing heavy on my limp body. My lip curled in a sneer. Unless I was facing her in a courtroom, she wasn’t worth my attention. A woman as vain as her thrived off of it, but for all I cared, she could stew in her misery. 

As soon as Sophia’s toxic presence had left the villa, William carefully lifted me up the winding staircase and into his grand master bedroom. He set me down on the canopied bed, treating me like I was made of glass. 

“I didn’t expect you to drive Sophia away like that,” I said, keeping my inflection neutral. “ That’s not like you.” When William failed to answer, I took a moment to study his face. ” William, what are you thinking about?” 

Again, William didn’t answer. Instead, he carefully lifted my injured leg and kept it raised on a couple of pillows. I watched curiously as he brought out the ointment medicine that the EMS technicians had given to me for my injury. To my surprise, he gingerly began applying the

medicine himself. I had half expected him to toss the tube carelessly onto my lap and make me do it myself. 

Silent, I watched as he began to delicately treat my injury. When was the last time I had seen him like this, so careful and caring? It was a shock to see, but I regarded it with only suspicion. I couldn’t let my guard down around someone as spiteful as William.
