Heidi suddenly grabbed Amelia, pulling her close and lowering her voice so that the nearby bodyguards wouldn't hear. "You're not afraid, are you? But you still have Adam."
Amelia couldn't believe Heidi was threatening her. She glared at Heidi. "You—"
"Amelia," Heidi interrupted sharply. "Look at you. Your face is bruised, and your lips are bleeding. How much longer do you think you'll live? Securing your life in exchange for Adam's future doesn't seem like such a bad deal, does it?"
Someone had to take the blame for this. Heidi wasn't about to sacrifice herself. Why else would she have been supporting Amelia and Adam all this time if not to use them now?
"Mr. Moore!" the bodyguards greeted in unison, lining up as Edward entered.
Edward's gaze immediately went to Amelia and Heidi, who were struggling behind the couch.
Heidi whirled around, her expression a mix of shock and excitement when she saw Gregory and Emma following Edward. "Mom! Dad!" she exclaimed.
Gregory and Emma rushed to her side with tears in their eyes. "Didi!" they called out.
Amelia was shoved aside and left to stand alone in a corner. It seemed to her that everyone else had someone to protect and love them. She was always the one abandoned. A wave of bitterness washed over her.
She wondered what made Janice so special. A woman from a small town, with no power and status, had still managed to win Edward's favor. And Heidi, foolish as she was, had doting parents who'd do anything for her.
Amelia gritted her teeth. She refused to accept this; she wasn't going to die here. Why did Janice and Heidi deserve everything while she was left with nothing?
Gregory and Emma held Heidi close. Emma's heart ached for her. When she saw the bruise on Heidi's shoulder, she immediately confronted Edward.
"How could you do this?" she demanded, her voice trembling with anger. "Didn't you even think about the relationship between the Ryans and the Moores?"
Edward leaned back on the couch, lighting a cigarette. "Maybe you should ask Heidi that question," he said casually.
