Chapter 16
Elaine wrapped up her conversation and pulled a cell phone out of her bag
“This is the phone Mom got me, and I don’t really need it anymore. It’s brand new. I’ve never even used it, and I’m giving it back to you. Please take
it to her, she said.
Harlan’s face went blank with shock as he processed her words. Flaine was clearly trying to distance herself from everyone, and that was more than he could handle. He didn’t even bother to take the phone.
Noticing this, Elaine set at down on

Back when she was part of the Yeats family, her mom and brothers would sometimes give Elaine things usually because Bianca didn’t want them, Even then, it brought her some joy.
Jewelry, phones, school bags, keychains, cute dresses–she used to appreciate these linle gestures and the warmth her brothers represented, but now those memories stung, so she didn’t want any of
“What did you just say?” Harlan asked, disbelief written all over his face, “You’re the biological daughter of the Yeats family Isn’t it normal for us to give you things! Who told you to pay us back”
He couldn’t believe that Elaine actually wanted to cut ties completely with the Yeats family. They had their share of drama and bad blood, but it never occurred to him that she would want to walk away for good
Maybe deep down, they thought Elaine would always stick around, no matter how badly she was treated
After
all, she was the sweet sister who gave her mom acupuncture, searched for Shawn in Snowmass, delivered love letter gifts to girls for him, and brought Jepson his asthma medicine in the dead of night
But now.
when Elaine looked at him, her eyes were flat and void of any warmth. The light that used to shine when she saw her brother was gone.
A sharp pang shot through Harlan’s heart.
Elaine simply said. “Once I make enough money, I’ll transfer it to your cand” And with that, she turned and walked away
Harlan watched Elaine walk away, a wave of panic hitting him out of nowhere. He kept telling himself that she was just overreacting, still fired up from when she had been wrongly accused before.
It didn’t make sense. He couldn’t stand her, but the thought of her leaving the Yeats family freaked him out so much.
After Elaine slipped out of her scrubs, she was about to check on Grace when she spotted Kingsley leaning against the wall. With his tall, broad- shouldered frame, he exuded a reassuring presence.
When he heard her coming, he turned to face her. Just like that. Elaine’s earlier gloom melted away, and she flashed him a bright, cheery smile–as if nothing had happened a moment before.
Kingsley couldn’t wrap his head around how quickly she could switch her mood.
“Mr. Morgan, are you seriously waiting for me?” she teased, looking playful.
Kingsley could see she was flirting with him, and despite what others might think, he wasn’t completely clueless about her intentions.
It felt like one of those classic teenage pranks, but he was intrigued to see what she had in mind.
“Yeah,” he responded, his voice coming out a little raspy for some reason. He locked eyes with her and said, “Grandma’s awake, and she wants to see

Chapter 16
Grace shook her head slightly but kept holding onto her hand. “Elaine, there’s something I want to tell you
Seeing Grace so frail rugged at Elaine’s heart. “Go ahead”
So Grace started. “Why bother sticking around in a gross place like the Yeats family’s Spending your whole life there just doesn’t make any sense. It would be much better if you could jump out of it
“If you don’t mind, I think you should marry Kingsley I believe he will treat you well. He’s a good kid. It’s just that his dad’s past mistakes have really affected his attitude
“Because of that, the girls his age tend to keep their distance. But I genuinely believe he’s a decent man
Elaine paused for a mo
a moment. Breaking free from the mess of the Yeats family was definitely the right move.
Even Grace understood what was really going on, but sadly, as the innkeeper, she never fully got it, which was why she had met a tragic end in her past life
Marrying into the Morgan family might just be the way to break that cycle.
Grace asked again. “Elaine, do you
believe what I said?”
Kingsley’s expression changed a bit when he heard Grace’s words, but he just held her hand and stayed quier
