The fact that, in that critical moment, Diana had called her first instead of Dylan spoke volumes about Suzy’s importance to her. But if she had answered that call, would Diana have avoided the crash? 

Suzy was convinced that Diana’s missing phone was still in the car. Since the dashcam footage only covered the outside, she’d have to inspect the car herself. 

Under the moonlight, Suzy made her way back to the precinct. Standing before the wrecked car, her heart tightened at the sight. The damage was extensive Diana had tried to go down fighting. What was on that phone that she’d risk her life to protect? 

After quietly unlocking the car, she combed through every inch, inside and out, but found nothing. It was possible the phone was off or out of battery, making it impossible to trace. And in such a limited space, where could Diana have hidden it? 

Thinking it over, Suzy decided her next stop was the hospital. 

She’d check on Diana, and if her condition allowed, she’d consider hypnotizing her. That way, she might uncover the phone’s location or whatever it contained. 

Tonight would be a sleepless one. 

Arriving at the hospital as quickly as possible, Suzy faced a new challenge–Dylan was stationed outside Diana’s room, making it difficult to approach. She thought for a moment, 

then called Victor. 

“You found them?” he answered, sounding both surprised and impressed by her speed. 

“Yeah,” she replied. “Sending them over now. 

Without waiting for a reply, she ended the call, then looked toward Dylan and counted silently. By the count of three, Victor had, as expected, called Dylan’s phone. 

Over the years, Suzy had come to know Victor’s temperament well–maybe not entirely, but well enough. She watched as Dylan finished his call, glanced back into Diana’s room, and then strode off down the hall. 

Once he was out of sight, Suzy emerged from her hiding spot. After changing into sterile gear, she entered Diana’s room, mindful of the strict post–op requirements for a sterile 

environment. 

Diana lay on the hospital bed, her body covered in tubes, her breathing weak, showing no signs of waking. 

Seeing her like this filled Suzy with a deep ache.

Diana’s injuries, especially the trauma to her head, would leave lasting effects. Even with the best recovery, she might never be the same
