After a restless night of tossing and turning, Suzy finally managed to get a bit of sleep just before dawn. Her mind had been tangled in knots all night, and no matter how she tried to clear it, unwanted thoughts kept surfacing, like stubborn roots taking hold in her mind. 

Barely an hour later, she was woken by the chatter of the house staff. Already irritable from lack of sleep, she didn’t even bother to freshen up before heading downstairs to scold them. “What’s with all the talking so early in the morning?” 

The maids immediately fell silent, heads bowed. This was the first time she’d heard such a commotion from this otherwise well–trained staff, so curiosity got the better of her. “What were you all going on about?” 

They exchanged glances, mumbling fragments she couldn’t quite piece together. Finally, one maid spoke up, “It’s Mr. Wright. He sent over a lot of things.” 

“Dylan Wright?” Suzy frowned. “I thought I made it clear he wasn’t welcome at the Harlow estate.” 

“He didn’t come himself; he sent people to deliver it,” the maid explained. “There were too many of them, all highly trained, so security didn’t want to get involved.” 

Suzy muttered under her breath, “He’s got some nerve.” 

Returning to her room to change, she went straight to the main hall, where, just as the maid had said, an impressive collection of items had been delivered–luxury foods, accessories, clothing, even entire racks of apparel lined up neatly. 

And at the center of it all stood Desmond, Dylan’s ever–loyal assistant. 

The moment he saw her, he greeted her respectfully, “Good morning, Mrs. Wright.” 

Already annoyed, Suzy’s irritation flared. “Desmond, I thought I asked you to call me Miss 

Frost.‘ 

Desmond only smiled. “I was instructed by Mr. Wright to address you that way.” 

Suzy’s glare sharpened. “So just because he tells you to, you’ll do it?” 

She didn’t want to be harsh, but in her current mood, she wasn’t about to spare anyone’s feelings. “If he told you to jump off a cliff, would you?” 

Desmond fell silent, caught between conflicting orders. One wanted him to use the title, the other forbade it. How had he ended up in the middle of this mess?
