When Felix returned home, he found the sprawling suburban house still ablaze with lights.

Carol was planted on the couch, lost in some sitcom on the TV.

He draped his coat over the armchair and turned to the nanny with a question.

"Did she have dinner yet?"

"Mrs. Brown wasn't feeling hungry," the nanny replied.

His gaze shifted to Carol. Even with his return, she didn't spare him a glance.

A pang of sourness hit his heart, but he pushed it down and took a seat beside her.

"Why aren't you hungry?"

"I wanted to call Maja about something."

He shot a look to his assistant, who immediately fetched Carol's cell phone.

Clutching the phone, Carol stood up and walked to a quiet corner of the room.

A message from Nathan flashed on the screen – an audio clip.

She furrowed her brow, turned the volume down low, and held the phone to her ear. Felix's voice, laced with an odd persistence and animosity, came through.

"I married her just to keep her tied to me, so I can torment her whenever I want. She can never be rid of me."

Carol stared blankly at the screen; her fingers were stiff as she tried to type a response.

Nathan, noticing her 'typing' indication, hurriedly sent over a few more texts.

"That's what Felix spilled while he was drinking with me. In vino veritas, Carol. He really doesn't love you."

Carol found it almost comical. She didn't need Nathan to tell her that.

She knew better than anyone that Felix didn't love her.

She lowered her lashes; initially she wanted to discuss with Maja her thoughts about eloping with Nathan, feeling uncertain about causing such a stir. But now, with the suspicion of being pregnant, she felt restless, fearing that if she didn't leave the next day, she might never get another chance.
