But they didn’t stop swinging their bats and threatened him fiercely. 

“You played with my sister’s feelings; you’re going to pay for it today!” 

Carter has had his share of lovers, and his most recent one was the receptionist at his company. 

She was young, and he was very fond of her. He gave her two grand a month, and she catered to his every need. 

In his mind, his dealings with women were fair, and he didn’t deceive anyone. 

These men beating him were just making excuses. 

They beat him to a pulp and then slipped away. 

The security cameras here had been sabotaged beforehand, so Carter could not find them. 

Carter was sent to the hospital at 3 a.m. and rushed into the emergency room. 

Maja just wanted Carol’s bodyguard to teach Carter a lesson, but Carol’s men were more ruthless than she thought. 

Carol was helpless, but thankfully Carter was not in critical condition. He had to stay in the hospital, which happened to be where Neil 

was. 

Cristina came to see Carter the next day and walked into his room. 

“You scared me. Who did this to you?” 

She was furious, wanting to find the culprits and get revenge. 

With a battered face, Carter was unrecognizable, his eyes filled with pain and resentment. 

He was about to escape overseas. How could this have happened? 

Cristina sat by his bed, looking at him with a heartache, wanting to hold his arm. 

Suddenly, there was a knock on the room door; she quickly sat back in her chair. 

The door opened, and in walked Maja. 

She didn’t know if it was her imagination, but through the small window in the door, she thought the two people inside were sitting very 

close. 

“Carter, I heard you’ve been working hard at the company recently. Are you okay?” 

Carter’s pupils contracted as he saw Maja. 

Despite his inner panic, he still responded politely. 

“Thanks for coming to see me. I was just doing what I should.” 

Maja sat down, looking at Cristina, scrutinizing her. 

Cristina had been feeling down these days, and hearing that Neil had opened his eyes made her face turned pale when she saw Maja. 

“Cristina, you look pale,” Maja said lightly. “Haven’t you been resting well?” 

Cristina forced a smile and got up.. 

“Your dad’s in trouble, Carter’s in trouble, I’m worried our family is cursed. I should get someone to do a reading. Carter, take care of yourself. I’ll come to see you again.” 

Cristina was in a cold sweat. She stiffly walked towards the door. It wasn’t until the door closed that she let out a sigh of relief. 

Maja still stood in the room, looking straight at Carter. 

“I hear you’ve recently signed a contract for the company. I’m not clear which company the Pennyfeather family is partnering with. I tried asking the business department, but they didn’t know who I was, so they didn’t give me any information. However, you know who I am. You should be willing to tell me, right?” 

Carter’s hand instantly clenched into a fist. 

“Ms. Pennyfeather, why do you want to know this?” 

“Carter, just tell me the name of the company.” 

Carter froze, then a hint of mockery flashed in his eyes..
