The kidnappers were down before they even knew what hit them. 

Maja was standing next to lan, and she felt sick to her stomach watching the scene unfold. 

She never thought she’d be caught up in something like this. 

She always thought those cop movies were all smoke and mirrors. But now, it was clear as day that there was no such thing as a peaceful life. It was these guys in blue busting their butts in silence that kept them safe. 

lan was briefing the cops, “There are about a dozen more on the first floor.” 

No sooner had he said that than Maja wanted to check on the tattooed guy. 

But before she could take a step, lan pulled her back. 

“Watch it!” 

In the elevator, the tattooed man, gasping for his last breath, let off a shot. 

Maja was pushed to the ground by lan, and the bullet grazed his cheek, leaving a thin trail of blood. 

Had it strayed just a bit, it would have been his head. 

She sat on the floor, her mind a complete blank. 

The police fired a barrage of shots, killing the man, and then flocked around lan. 

“Mr. Raymond, are you okay?” 

“Mr. Raymond.” 

lan just looked at Maja, “You okay?” 

Maja’s mind was still a mess. If lan hadn’t pushed her, the bullet would have hit her chest. 

But now she was unharmed, and he had narrowly missed a bullet to the head. 

She opened her mouth, but no words came out. 

Jan must have been scared too, as he pulled her into his arms. 

Maja’s fingers were trembling slightly, and she wanted to ask him why he did it. His life was clearly more important than hers. 

But she knew if she asked, he’d just look at her with those deep eyes again.

A melee was about to erupt on the first floor, and lan was not part of it. He was in the surveillance room, tracking the kidnappers‘ movements. 

Maja stood by him, listening to his calm commands, and was reminded of his bravery when he was just a teen. 

Even if he wasn’t a businessman, lan would be a top–notch soldier. 

From the surveillance feed, Maja saw the police heading out, and the hostages in the hall were still huddling in fear. No one dared to make a sound. 

“Get down!” 

A cop shouted. The hostages all fell to the floor, and the police aimed their guns at the remaining kidnappers. 

Gunshots and screams filled the hall. 

Maja watched on the monitor, her heart aching.

The fight only lasted for ten seconds, then the gunshots stopped. 

The kidnappers were all down. 

Maja breathed a sigh of relief, feeling so weak in her knees, and she was about to collapse.
