He was the only one who came back.
They looked like snakes to me, because of the bluish color of their eyes. I imaged the guards to be nasty reptiles and amphibians, not because they actually resembled these things, but because the cold colors matched the coldness of the creatures to me.
We walked. And walked. And walked as they trudged beside us. I hated walking. I liked running when I was free to do so in whatever direction I chose. I preferred it even more when I could be in my wolf form, which had legs far more capable than mine. But like this, in the form they forced us to stay in? In my gangly human body of thin limbs and knobby knees, cracked lips and matted hair, the only thing I wanted to do was sit down.
"Come on, Rys," Kaiden grumbled. "You're walking too slow." He eyed the soldiers in their wolf forms eyeing me.
"I can't," I said. I don't know how many times I had said that since we started, but this time, I was sure I meant it. I couldn't take another step. I was prepared to tell him to leave me there, but he gave me a harsh look.
"You walk, Krys. And you walk quickly." He grabbed my arm and dragged me until I righted myself again.
But I didn't want to walk because I didn't know where we were going. I just wanted to go back to Mom and Dad, even if they were crazy, but Kaiden had told me that they were going a different way and that we couldn't go back to them. At the time, I didn't know what had happened that night.
All I knew as we were walking was that his words didn't make any sense at all, because I knew everyone was supposed to be going this way, but I believed him the way little siblings do. Gullible. Easily impressed. I believed everything my big brother told me, except that I would keep walking, because I knew my legs would seize up at any moment.
And they did. I fell to the ground, nearly taking him with me. He tugged on my arms. "Get up, Krys, I said. Why don't you ever listen to me?"
I crossed my arms in protest. Let those stupid guards keep walking with their weird eyes. I would sit and wait for my mother with Mr. Huggles in my arms. I was sure Kaiden was taking us where we weren't supposed to be in the first place, and it would land us with more lickings when we got home.
Surely this was not where we were supposed to be.
