I cross my arms, but then I wince. I opt for just sitting back against the bench. "Okay." I turn to him, ready to wrap this conversation up. "So if you don't know whether it was a good decision or not, who can tell me?"
"I'm sorry?" he asks quickly.
I give him a look.
He feigns innocence.
I sigh. He's playing dumb, but I get why. It's one thing for me to ask questions. It's another to ask him to name names. But what other choice do I have?
I pull the notepad up on my phone. "Ready when you are."
He clears his throat, staring at my phone warily. "Could you put that away?"
"I'll forget what you said," I say. "Come on. At least it's not the voice recorder."
He scratches his head. "Er..." He rolls his shoulders out. "Um..."
"Just say it," I say firmly.
"Okay, okay. Yeesh." He glares at me from the corner of his eyes. "Coach Kenet or Ms. Baines."
I shake my head. "Absolutely not. The brothers would know in a heartbeat." I hesitate. Is it too soon to say it? "What about..." I opt for a different suggestion first. "Nurse Janice?"
It's like his blood runs cold. "No."
"Why?" I raise an eyebrow.
"If you need to go to the nurse's office for medical reasons, by all means, go ahead." He gives me a firm look. "But outside of school, stay away from her."
"Okay," I nod, wide-eyed.
That seems to calm him down a bit, but I'm even more on edge. "Why?" I ask.
He doesn't answer.
I decide to just come right out and ask, "What about Mr. Reynolds? Would he work?"
Dante chokes. "Mr. Reynolds?"
I nod.
He looks at me incredulously. "The guy that tried to kill you?"
"Is that a no?" I ask.
I don't push it anymore when he gives me a look. "Anyone else?" I ask just to save face.
He shakes his head. "Unfortunately, no."
"Really?" My face falls.
He gives me a sympathetic look. "Sorry. I guess you kidnapped the wrong guard, huh?"
"No. You've been a great help." If only he knew Michael's plan. I get up to leave, hesitating for a moment. "I'm guessing I don't need to say this conversation stays between us?" I ask.
