A few people nod. Aiden gives me a look.
I clear my throat. "Um..." I guess this is confession time. "I think this would be a great opportunity for Suzie to prove herself as key advisor."
Carson scoffs. "You don't have to parrot whatever Aiden tells you. Just ignore him like the rest of us do."
"Excuse me?" Aiden asks.
I'm a little frustrated too. I know Carson's just trying to defend me, but still. I'm not some mindless drone. "I'm not parroting Aiden. I'm the one who recommended this decision in the first place."
Carson double takes. Krys' jaw drops. Michael looks like a mad scientist whose watching his plan fall into place.
"But... I thought... You said... She..." Carson turns to Bri. "Advice please?" he asks.
Bri rubs her chin, analyzing my expression. "I think... this'll be good for the pack."
"Good for the pack?" Carson asks.
Bri nods. "It'll create unity in our ranks, and if Mia asked for it, why not?" Her words say one thing. Her eyes say another. She gives me a look as if to say, I'm onto you. I look away.
A few people nod. "It has been weird not having Suzie around," Krys says.
Traitor. But I keep a straight face.
Carson's shoulders relax. "Okay." He turns to me. "If that's what you want, Mia." Then he whispers loud enough for the whole lunchroom to hear. "Kick me under the table if you want me to say something. I'll take the blame."
"Are you freaking serious?" Suzie asks. "You know what? I think I need to say something."
"Please don't, Z," Ethel says.
"I have to." She sits down beside Axel, at the nearest seat. "First of all, I don't want there to be any confusion later. I'm not standing in no damn bushes. You better invite me into your house, Mia."
I cock my head back.
"Second of all." She reaches for a fry off Ethel's tray. "Be a dear Bri and get one of your minions to vallet my car to Mia's house. I'll be taking her personal chauffeur today."
Michael cocks his head back. "Her what?"
Suzie smiles at him. "Don't expect a tip."
"This bitc-" Michael starts.
I elbow him.
She takes another fry off Ethel's tray, but he doesn't seem to mind. "If that's all, I'll..." He gestures in a random direction. "Be right back." He gets up and leaves. Everyone watches.
When he's out of sight, Suzie says, "It's gonna happen soon, isn't it?"
"Oh yeah," Bri says.
Aiden nods. "I'm surprised it hasn't happened already. He's been like this for weeks."
"Like what?" Carson asks.
I'm wondering too. I look at Michael. He shrugs. Of course he doesn't know.
"The crankiness," Bri says.
"The moodswings," Krys says.
"The irregular appetite," Suzie says.
