I'm gonna throw myself out of the car.
"The point is," she says. "It's a nice concept, the idea that you can save someone. But it's a lie. People have to save themselves."
"I don't get what you're saying."
She looks into my eyes when we stop at a red light. "You can't save him, Mia. Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome needs to find his own girl. Not his brother's."
"I'm not trying to save him, Mom," I say.
She gives me a look. "Well whatever you were trying to do with his lips."
"Mom," I scream.
She shrugs. "Just tell Carson, please."
I don't say anything.
"Relationships aren't who we choose. It's the fact that we chose them." She sits up straighter. "You made a commitment to Carson. Honor him like he honors you."
But I'm with his brothers! I bury my face in my hands. This is a mess. "Okay. I'll talk to him," I say.
She smiles. "Good."
I grumble.
She keeps talking. "Invite him to dinner after. Assuming he doesn't break up with you."
I give her a look.
"I would."
Mom.
Eventually she pulls up to a place I've never seen before.
"Where are we?" I ask.
"The Farmer's Market, of course." She gestures towards the rundown building. It's pretty much deserted.
I look at all the trees. The empty parking lot. "Why didn't we go somewhere closer to the house?"
"Don't be silly. They don't have the spices I need." She actually gets out of the car.
She's crazy. I stare out the window like there's an ax-murderer lurking in the bushes. For all I know, there could be. She motions for me to follow her. I do so reluctantly, putting the tip of one shoe against the pavement.
"Mia," she says exasperatedly.
I can't help it. I want to live. I jump when my phone buzzes.
I pull it out of my pocket, looking down at the screen. Krys. Relief washes over me. "Krys-"
"Where are you?" She sounds out of breath.
The hairs on the back of my neck stand up. "What do you mean? You don't know?"
"We kind of... lost you," she whispers.
My heart stops. "What?"
"You didn't exactly give us a head's up that you'd be going somewhere," Bri says defensively.
I'm freaking out. "So you just left me?"
"We chased you for thirty minutes!"
