"Me too," she says.
"No, we shouldn't even be worrying about this stuff right now," I say. "It's late."
We lie in more silence, until Suzie starts complaining about how she's fully awake now and disturbed by thoughts of her mom's new husband. "It's all your fault, Mia," she practically growls.
"We could...talk about other things?" I offer.
She huffs. "Like what?"
I wave my hand as if that'll conjure up and idea in my head. "Well." It hits me. "There's Dante."
"Dante?" She scrunches her face. "What about him?"
"You know... You liking him." I smile.
She cringes. "I don't."
"It's okay," I chuckle. "I think he likes you too-"
"I don't," she shouts. All the humor in the room evaporates.
I put my hands up in defense. "Okay. I'm sorry."
She turns the other way.
"Suzie?"
"It's fine. Just drop it."
I frown. "Are you sure?"
"Yeah." She blocks her head with a pillow. "... It's another mom thing."
"Oh." This conversation did a 360.
Silence.
"Do you..." I clear my throat. "...want to talk about it?"
"What's there to talk about?"
"Oh." I look away. "Then nevermind."
"Oh my god, Mia. You have to ask again." She throws her hands in the air, exasperatedly.
"Oh!" I can't keep up. "Then, uh, do you want to talk about it?"
"If you insist." She holds her pillow against her chest. "We were the perfect family. Picket fence, minivan, and everything. Then one day Mr. Reynolds' son popped out of nowhere." She flings the pillow this way and that. "Rey was her imprint. Rey needed her. Rey couldn't stand her being with another man and his kid."
"So she just left you guys?" I ask.
"Not at first," Suzie says. "But you could just tell her head was somewhere else..." She holds the pillow against her chest again, tapping her fingers against it. "I always told myself that I'd never let the bond rule my life the way Mom did. I was going to marry Carson, imprint or not. I was going to have a happy life as luna, and if some other guy came, who cared. But then you came and well... You know..." She laughs sadly. "Actually, it's kind of weird talking about this with you."
It's not just weird, it's awkward as hell but... "You can," I say.
She rolls her eyes. "I know... You're an annoyingly good friend."
"... You are too," I say.
