Ditched Cheating Alpha, I Led My Daughter to Life's Peak novel Chapter 39

I try to keep myself calm. I just need to get to the kitchen and text Michael. I push through the glaring mass of bodies, but not even the kitchen is a safe place.

Apparently, the hate isn't confined to the living room. What a concept.

"She thinks she's all that," the girl who was literally sitting beside me on the car ride says to a crowd of girls around the cooler, sipping on some root beer like she's the one who needs a strong drink.

All of the girls are facing away from me, but they have to know I'm here right? I step a little harder on the floor to make my presence known. They keep going.

"She doesn't even belong to them." This time it's a girl I recognize from gym.

"And how do you figure that?" I hear Krys' preppy voice. "You can sense the change yourself, can't you?"

"Doesn't matter. She's human. There's no way. It's a fluke." Another girl says.

"It's a fluke because it's a fluke, or it's a fluke because you want someone to talk shit about?" Brittany asks. "Sounds to me like y'all are just bitter."

I can't believe my ears. These two are the ones defending me?

Aiden's POV

It wasn't surprising to hear that she didn't even consider me as an option. I kind of figured that with the way she hung on Axel's every word and pretended to be as tired of Carson as I am. That's why I didn't go to her at the party. I had more important things to do. Pack things. After all, despite Carson's ideas, parties are only good for one thing-networking.

Alliances are the bedrock upon which we built our pack, and the sight of a human mate wasn't exactly working in our favor. In short, I was busting my ass while my brothers were off having the time of their lives with our imprint, and they didn't even have the sense to make sure she was taken care of. I know I may be overreacting, but have you seen the recent studies on soda? I just... hearing her drinking that stuff mixed with the sound of her messed up heart reminded me of just how frail humans are. It reminded me of her.

Something just came over me. I couldn't even hear what Carson and Axel were saying anymore. I just wanted her away.

This bond is a curse.

Her soft, kind voice suddenly sounds like nails against a chalkboard to me. Funny how our perception of people can change just based off of how pissed off we are at them.

"We're not bitter by any means," Suzie says gently. "I just think it's funny how she keeps following Axel around like he wants her when everyone knows he's with Juliet."

My eyes widen. The redhead?

Suzie turns to me as if I had just suddenly appeared out of thin air. She mock gasps and covers her mouth, barely containing her laughter with the other girls. "Oops." She turns and whispers very loudly to the others, "Why didn't you guys tell me she was there?"

She knew I was listening the whole time. They all did. I wish she would just cut it out already and be frank with me. That's what hurts the most when it come to her. If she'd just said, "Hey, I like Carson. I'd prefer if you wouldn't pursue anything with him," it would've been fine. Instead she decided to try to manipulate me, talk behind my back, blatantly disrespect me, and now make fun of me for no reason all while pretending to be my friend. I didn't do anything to her.

I just stare at her. My hand my my side, clutching my phone.

"Well it's true," she says. "They're together right now. Go see for yourself." She saunters over to the opening of the kitchen and looks out into the living area.
