"Are you really okay?" he asks again.
I want to ask him that again, but I just nod. "I'm fine."
He pulls me against him, hard, like he's not afraid I'll break but instead like he's afraid something will take me from him. "I'm sorry." He rests his chin on top of my head and wraps his arms around me so tightly I don't think he'll ever let go. Right now I don't want him to. I'd be lying if I didn't admit that, just by being wrapped in his arms, held against his firm chest, I suddenly feel like this entire ordeal is over.
I'm glad he's here.
I stare in horror with wide eyes. What did I just think? Carson. Am I catching the imprint bond or something?
"Were you that afraid?" Carson asks when he sees my face. "I'm so sorry. I won't ever leave you again. I'm gonna move you straight into my house. We'll come back for your stuff later."
Wait. What?
"Your services are no longer needed, Onai." Carson picks me up bridal style. "My mate is safely in my arms now." He buries his head against my neck. I can feel him smirk against my skin as I, quietly, scream my protests.
What is he talking about? I take everything I said back. "Put me down, Carson."
"I've decided some things, Mia. I'm just going to destroy every pack that had anything to do with you being in danger. And you know what," Carson says hotly against my neck. "I don't usually say this, but I'm gonna say it. I'm so grateful to have Onai as one of our betas..." His words die from his lips when his eyes fully take in Onai's appearance.
Onai is staring at Carson like a deer in headlights. Like he's about to meet his maker.
Carson's face moves away from my skin. His hands fall from my body, gently putting me down. Then he just watches Onai for a while, his eyes getting more and more golden. "Why is your dick basically hanging out in front of my mate?"
I smack my hand over my mouth.
Carson takes in the room we're in. His eyes fly from my bed to my rug. From me to Onai. Then they finally land on my now closed bedroom door. "Why are you in Mia's old room with her alone? And naked?"
"Carson," I start.
He takes a step away from me, bawling his hands into fists at his side. He looks like he's just barely holding it in. Like he's about to lose it at a moment's notice. "Did he touch you?" he asks.
I shake my head quickly. "He didn't do anything to me but save my life," I say it with all the sincerity I can.
"From what? Thirst?" he asks.
I give him a look. I'm not doing this.
