Upon hearing the charges, Lyra forgot about the matter with Joycelyn and flew into a rage. She began raining punches on Lucian, screaming. “You disgusting pig! You’ve been screwing around behind my back!” 

Lucian was surprised by the sudden attack but didn’t dare to defend himself. He continued to endure Lyra’s relentless assault. 

Iris was equally shocked at the news of Phineas‘ cheating, but she was much more timid. Before she could open her mouth to say anything, Phineas pulled a long face and cursed at her. “Your damn daughter is nothing but a jinx.” 

Then, turning to the officers, he barked, “We can walk by ourselves. You can keep those cuffs.” 

The police officers surrounded the two men and escorted them out of the building. Lyra and Iris also lost interest in messing with Joycelyn and quietly made their way back home in shame. 

Meanwhile, at the group president’s office, William knocked on the door and entered. “Mr. Grant, the two men were detained and escorted out by the police. Security has also been instructed to bar their entry should they return to the building again. 

“I’ve looked into their backgrounds and this is what we’ve found out so far,” William continued his report while handing Ellison a folder. “Phineas Mercer, in particular, is quite a scummy character. It seems like Joycelyn tried to avoid him as much as possible by staying in the school dorms since high school.” 

Ellison looked up at William wordlessly. His expression didn’t reveal any emotion, but his eyes betrayed the opposite. “Have the police detain them for forty–eight hours and inform me when they’ve been released.” 

“Yes, sir,” William replied. He began to turn away but then changed his mind suddenly and turned back. In that instant, he’d shed his rigorous and professional posture and his voice took on a gleeful tone. “By the way, Mr. Grant, congratulations on your marriage. Would you like me to put together a wedding planning team?” 

“That’s not necessary. She’s shy, so it’s better to avoid any fanfare Ellison answered. His icy demeanor seemed to warm any time he spoke of Joycelyn. 

“How about lunch arrangements from now on? Will the missus be dining with you?” William enquired. 

“She wants to keep a low profile, so probably not,” Ellison said. 

“Got it,” William responded. With a suppressed grin, he made to leave. 

“Hold on. Go to Accounting and find out what her account number is. Email it to me,” Ellison instructed. 

“Alright. I’ll head there now,” William moved quickly and made the trip to Accounting in 

“Joycelyn, it’s time for lunch!” Aurelia and Selene called out in a sing–song manner. 

“Yes, I’m coming,” Joycelyn replied light–heartedly as she turned off her computer. She picked up her phone and joined Aurelia and Selene. The three of them made their way to the staff cafeteria. 

There were three cafeterias across three floors. Each one had a different theme and boasted award–winning chefs. 

Joycelyn enjoyed eating in the cafeteria since it was tasty and reasonably priced. Before, she used to give herself a tight

monthly budget of three hundred dollars for meals, but now tha she’d cut ties with the Mercer family and her mother, she wanted to treat herself to a lavish meal. 

Joycelyn felt her phone vibrate but she ignored it, distracted by the array of food options before her. She was particularly drawn to the spicy tacos shop and joined the line for it by hersel 

While waiting, she looked through her phone and saw a notification from her bank. As soon as she opened it, her eyes popped. She counted the number of digits in her account balance carefully. 

There was no mistake. There was now a six–figure balance in her account, an extra 300 thousand dollars compared to the last time she’d checked. It had been transferred from Ellison’s personal bank account. 

Joycelyn immediately closed the application, afraid that someone around her might see. 

Ellison had said there was no need to sign a pre–nuptial agreement, but they hadn’t discussed any specifics. Joycelyn had assumed that they would continue to keep their finances separate. She didn’t expect him to send her such a large sum of money. 

She opened her chat with Ellison and sent a message, [Did you transfer money to me?] 

Ellison’s reply was quick. [Yeah.] 

Joycelyn typed quickly with both hands. [Why?] 

Ellison said simply, [It’s for you to spend. Buy whatever you want. Feel free to let me know if it isn’t enough.] 

To him, it was an expression of his sense of responsibility and care as a husband, but Joycelyn didn’t feel overjoyed or ecstatic over her sudden windfall. She only felt pressure. 

She immediately replied, [It’s not necessary. My salary is enough And you already spent money on me yesterday.] Then she opened her bank application again and tried to transfer the money back. 

Her account had a transfer limit, though, so she could only return him half the amount. She sent him another saying, [Sorry, there’s a transfer limit on my account. I’ll return the rest to you soon.]

Joycelyn was adamant about not accepting the money. She was afraid that she would mistake all these gestures as a show of love. It was easy to be grounded in pain, but in love, it might be a struggle to break free. 

When Ellison saw Joycelyn’s text, he frowned slightly. [Don’t transfer it back to me. I won’t say this a second time, so don’t make me repeat myself.] 

His message carried an air of finality, and Joycelyn could tell that his tone was tinged with annoyance. She didn’t dare to refuse again, so she answered, [Okay. But this amount is more than enough, so don’t send me any more. I can’t spend it all.] 

Ellison stopped replying. 

Joycelyn had her suspicions confirmed. Ellison was upset. She didn’t say anything more as well, and as she reached the front of the line, she placed her order and paid for it digitally. Her hand was still shaking when she tapped her phone on the payment terminal. 

As Joycelyn, Aurelia, and Selene enjoyed their lunch together, Aurelia brought up the joint venture issue. Selene joined in and said, “It’s too bad my boyfriend’s birthday is today, otherwise I’d go with you guys.” 

Aurelia disagreed. “To tell you the truth, this type of networking sn’t quite suitable for young girls. If Linda hadn’t twisted Joycelyn’s arm into going, I wouldn’t have allowed it myself.”

Selene wasn’t convinced. “We’ll be representing the Grant Grou surely that counts for something.”

“The Grant Group is indeed reputable, but we’re just salaried workers. Those mid–sized enterprise bosses are looking to work with Grant Group, but it’s also not beneath them to try and take advantage of their female associates,” Aurelia explained.

“I’ll be careful,” Joycelyn said as she self–consciously looked down at her outfit. Luckily, the blouse and pants she was wearing today was conservative and professional.

After her lunch, Joycelyn lay down in one of the sleeping pods for a power nap. Her heart still pounding from seeing her bank account balance earlier. 

In the afternoon, just after five, Linda instructed Aurelia and Joycelyn to tag along with her to the event. 

As a courtesy, Joycelyn sent Ellison a text to update him about her plans for that evening so that he’d be able to make his own dinner arrangements. 

When they arrived at the hotel, Joycelyn parked the car, and the three of them headed to the entrance to guests. Not a moment later, several luxury cars arrived one after the other.
