I opened the door, and Carter quickly caught me. “Chloe, don’t worry.”

I sighed, knowing worrying would not help.

I breathed a sigh of relief, but my worry did not ease. “What about Whitney?” 

“We haven’t found any sign of her yet.” 

Carter knew I would not be at peace until I saw her for myself, so he made sure the area was safe before taking me to the island. 

As everyone continued to search, I heard a report over the walkie–talkie, “Shadow spotted on the west cliff -two men and a woman, one is a girl in white.” 

“Whitney!” 

My heart raced, and I immediately took off in that direction. 

“Chloe, slow down! Be careful!” Carter called after me, quickly catching up and lifting me up. 

I clutched his clothes tightly, fear consuming me. I had no idea what had happened to Whitney, but the other two were surely Taylor and Luther. What would happen to her between them? 

“It’s okay, Whitney will be fine,” Carter tried to comfort me, 

As we neared the cliff’s edge, I heard Whitney’s agonized voice. 

I broke free from Carter’s hold and ran toward the sound. 

“Chloe, wait!” Carter’s warning was barely out of his mouth when I heard a gunshot. 

Damian’s voice echoed, “Mrs. Bolton, be careful!” 

Carter acted swiftly, spotting the shadows in the woods and immediately firing without hesitation. Call for backup, quickly!” he ordered. 

Gunshots rang out behind us, but Carter kept me shielded. All I could think about, though, was Whitney
