The moment I saw a shelf filled with leather files, a wave of déjà vu hit me.
I was sure the key was inside there.
I immediately removed all the files one by one; a few of them fell to the ground, but I cared less. To my surprise, as I pushed aside the last file, a small locker came into view at the back of the shelf.
My hand reached out for it. I tried to open it, only to find that it was locked. My eyes burned into the files I had just pushed aside. I picked up the blue one and opened it to find a small key hidden between the papers.
How do I know this so precisely?
Though I had stepped into Nikolai’s study for the first time, I moved around as if I had known this place for years. The familiarity of the room was both comforting and disconcerting. The thought bothered me, but I kept it aside to avoid distracting myself from my real purpose.
I immediately inserted the key and unlocked the locker, and the compartment clicked open. My heart pounded in my chest with anticipation.
There it was!
The key—a thick and heavy one. It was not just the key to the basement but also to uncover all the truths that had been kept hidden from me for so long.
I had every right to know about my life. My father never told me everything because he didn’t want to bother me, but I was strong enough to face the truth. I needed to know it. Everything matched up with my mental health. I wanted peace, and I could have it only when I knew everything about myself.
I jumped in place when suddenly the window rattled.
Is someone there?
I leaned slightly, only to find that it was the wind rushing inside.
Shaking my head, I focused on my task. My fingers trembled slightly as they curled around the basement key.
It gleamed under the evening sun's rays that filtered into the room through the window as I pulled it out.
I let out a shaky breath.
I need to reach the basement itself today. I can't wait for anything any longer. I need answers to all my questions.
With my family gone, Dimitri is the only hope left.
I turned around and was about to rush out of the study when I stumbled upon the scattered files.
I bit my lip and stopped dead in my tracks. I can't leave this room in a mess. Nikolai will surely know what I did behind his back.
If I don't find out the whole truth today and need to visit him again, I would be closing all the doors for myself before I even open them.
Shoving the basement key into my pocket, I bent down and picked up the files to place them back in their proper spots.
It took me a few seconds to gather them from the floor, but it consumed a full fifteen minutes to put them back in their places.
Just as I was about to step back, a small album peeking out of a large file caught my attention.
