Mafia's Rebellious Bride: His Forbidden Obsession novel Chapter 29

The moment Nikolai left, I let out a deep sigh and sat on the edge of the bed. The key once again dug into my skin, reminding me of its presence. My fingers slipped into my pocket, and I pulled out the key. I held it between my fingers; the metal shone under the lights.

I wanted to meet Dimitri today, to learn the whole truth, to understand why Nikolai killed my family and what exactly he did to me in the past. But now that Nikolai is back home early, it doesn't seem easy.

I clenched the key in my fist. I had to hide this key somewhere Nikolai can't see.

But where?

This wasn’t just any room. It was his room. His space. I coukdn’t stop him from wandering around or touching things.

My eyes scanned the room, searching for possibilities.

The wardrobe? No. He might go through his clothes.

The drawer? Too obvious.

The bathroom? He spent too much time there.

I needed a place he would never think to check.

My gaze landed on a tall flower vase in the corner of the room. It was sleek, dark, and just wide enough to fit my hand inside.

Perfect.

My heart pounded as I reached for it. I pulled out the flowers and placed the key inside. Once I was sure that it had landed to the bottom, I filled the vase with the flowers once again.

Sigh.

Nikolai's senses are as sharp as a hawk, even if he is unaware of it. He can easily detect if something is wrong. After all, he's the Mafia King. But I'm also his wife. A rebellious bride.

As I turned around, a smirk tugged at my lips, but the sight of the dress on the bed quickly soured my mood.

Huff.

From my clothes to my meals, from my movements to my very breath—Nikolai dictated everything. And yet, he had the audacity to say I wasn’t his hostage?

I'm not sure where he's taking me, and I'm not interested in going to any parties with him, but I don't have any other options right now. I know that if he wants me to attend this party with him, he will force me to do so. It would be better if I listened to him now if I want to carry out my plan in the future.

Sighing, I pulled out the contents of the bags. It was a silver-colored, shimmering gown with matching heels and jewelry.

Is he taking me to the ball?

Oh, of course. How could I forget? This was the time of year when the most powerful men of the underworld came together to flaunt their wealth, alliances, and power plays.

My mind raced.

This is perfect.

This was my chance to meet Nikolai's rivals. I knew a few of them, as they were allies of my father.

I should attend it, as this will give me an opportunity to meet Nikolai's rivals. If I played my cards right, this night could be the first step toward bringing him down.

I couldn’t afford to miss this.

A wicked smile ghosted my lips as I picked up the dress.

Fine, Nikolai. I’ll play along tonight. But only because it serves my purpose.

He wants to parade me around like a trophy. Fine. But he’s forgetting one thing—trophies can be stolen.

My eyes flicked to the clock. I am left with only forty minutes to get ready. I had better start it now.

I immediately rushed to the bathroom and took a quick shower before slipping into the gown. I began doing my makeup and hairstyle, keeping it simple and elegant. Once I was done, I put on the jewelry and the heels.

Taking a step back, I glanced at my reflection in the mirror.

Not bad.

I looked refined. Polished. The very image of a Mafia King’s queen.

If only they knew the queen was plotting against her king.

As I took one last look, the door opened, and Nikolai entered. When he saw me, he came to a complete stop, and for the first time, I noticed his breath hitch. His lips parted in surprise, and his fingers twitched at his sides as if he had been rendered speechless.
