King squinted, glancing out the window.
Outside, there were barely any skyscrapers, even though they were in the heart of the city. It was still impoverished and underdeveloped, with streets full of potholes.
Not far off, plumes of smoke rose from burning trash. The city lacked a proper waste management system, so people burned their garbage, filling the air with thick smoke and making the air quality terrible.
But in a place where people struggled to meet basic needs, who cared about air quality?
Plus, a deadly disease loomed, making life constantly precarious.
Joseph voiced his concerns because he couldn't bear the thought of King being in any danger. DreamTech Designs couldn't afford it, and neither could Seattle.
King's life was incredibly valuable.
Joseph knelt, silently bowing his head.
After a long pause, King finally spoke.
"This might be the last adventure Brielle and I have together, Joseph. You wouldn't understand; you've never cared for a woman. Every second I spend rushing towards her, I'm filled with a happiness that even transcends death."
He placed his hand on Joseph's shoulder, giving it a reassuring pat.
"Also, your life is important too. Making it back alive, both of us—that's the perfect ending."
Joseph stood rigid, not daring to move.
The King he knew now was vastly different from before.
The old King was all about swift and decisive action. Anyone in his way wouldn't see another day.
He never cared for anyone's life, sometimes not even his own. His goal was to climb higher and higher.
He was cold, never enjoying what life had to offer.
