Mortimer's brow furrowed as he contemplated the news.
The dust had barely settled on the Montiria affair, and already their enemies were stirring up trouble again. He knew that Gadel's position was crucial. Any shift could undo the fragile peace with Montiria, potentially plunging them back into open hostilities.
"What do you think we should do?" Mortimer's tone was grave as he fixed his gaze on Matthew. He trusted that his colleague wouldn't have called this urgent meeting without a plan.
Matthew leaned forward, his voice low and determined. "Mortimer, I need you to gather a group of merchants who own a significant amount of Dornian Emeralds. We'll form our own alliance to counter their schemes."
This was Matthew's solution.
"No matter how much they shift tactics or scheme, if we stand firm, we can outmaneuver them. Isn't their plan to flood the market with Montirian Ducats and use them to purchase Dornian Emeralds in bulk? We'll counter that by using our Dornian Emeralds to buy Montirian Ducats. We'll buy as much as they offer and see how they plan to raise prices."
As Matthew outlined his strategy, Mortimer's eyes gleamed with understanding.
Yes, this could work!
"But remember, Mortimer," Matthew continued, his voice cautioning, "before you bring any merchants into the fold, ensure they're thoroughly vetted. Their backgrounds must be spotless. We can't risk leaks before we even begin."
Mortimer nodded in agreement. "I'll gather a trusted group of merchants and investors in the next few days. We still have time if we aim for three days from now."
Finding trustworthy merchants would be challenging, but there was no immediate rush. Even if Garrett's faction began their maneuvers, it would take time to complete their plans. Matthew and Mortimer's immediate task was to secure a dozen reliable merchants and investors who could seamlessly integrate their actions with Garrett's initial moves.
Once Mortimer had left Martial League, Matthew sighed and trudged back upstairs, where a mountain of documents awaited him.
He and Stellan had been waking up at five and working until midnight daily. The relentless workload made Matthew nostalgic for his days on the battlefield. Back then, even amid the crossfire of overt and covert attacks, he had never felt this exhausted.
