The man's voice was steady and low, without a hint of emotion, yet Selena felt her heart sink deeper and deeper into despair. She realized she had really pushed it this time, stepping right into territory she knew was forbidden to him.
Being betrayed by those closest to you is tough for anyone to swallow, let alone someone as proud and self-assured as Everett! Yet, he had pushed her to this point, leaving her no choice but to fight back.
Selena closed her eyes, trying to quell the storm of anger and sadness in her heart. She couldn't let Derick and Ava get caught up in this mess.
"Everett, I'm the one responsible here. If you’re angry, take it out on me, leave them out of this," she urged, keeping her voice as calm as she could.
"Derick has been loyal to you for so long; he won't make this mistake again. And Ava, she's practically watched you grow up, taking care of you all these years. Surely, that counts for something..."
Everett chuckled softly, lifting his eyes to meet hers. "Selena, are you begging me?"
The word 'beg' felt like a slap in the face.
Selena clenched her fists, the veins on her hands standing out. She bit down on her lower lip until it nearly turned white, trembling as she forced out the words.
"Yes, I'm begging you!"
He simply wanted to vent his anger, and if playing along would calm him, so be it. Ever since he had confined her, ignoring her wishes and demanding she bear his children, he had obliterated her dignity.
Yet, as she spoke, tears welled up in her eyes. She had once loved him so much, doing all sorts of foolish things just hoping he'd notice her. But she eventually accepted that she would never occupy a place in his heart. Despite the hurt, she tried to pull herself together.
The three people he trusted most had turned on him. He, Mr. Bennett, had been too lenient!
Everett's dark eyes grew colder, the fleeting softness vanishing as if it had never been there. He wasn't one to be soft-hearted or indecisive. He always knew his objectives and pursued them with a clear, firm hand.
"Mrs. Bennett."
His cool fingertips gently brushed away her tears, then he gripped the back of her head firmly, pulling her close. A cold smile crept onto his lips, his words sharp and biting, "These tears are nothing compared to how you'd cry in bed."
Selena looked up, her tear-filled eyes meeting his unforgiving gaze.
