Selena's face clouded over a bit. It wasn't so much that Joy's words were harsh, but more about the fact that her kids were right there. Such foul language had no place around them.
Turning to Ava, she said, "Ava, why don't you take the kids somewhere else to play?" Ava was just as angry. If it weren't for the kids, she would have confronted Joy already. She remembered all too well how Joy, pretending to be a friend, had repeatedly caused trouble for her mistress.
Holding back her frustration, Ava warned Selena to be careful, then scooped up Haley and took Mateo's hand, leading them away. The kids were hesitant to leave, especially Mateo, who kept glancing back at his mom, worried she might get picked on.
Selena gave him a comforting smile, mouthing, "Don't worry, Mommy's okay." Spotting this, Joy's sneer deepened. "You do such rotten things, and you're scared your kids will find out?"
"It's better they learn early what kind of person their mom is, so they understand dignity and honor!"
Once the kids were out of earshot, Selena felt a bit more relaxed. She looked up at Joy's spiteful face, took a sip of her coffee, and smiled calmly. "Joy, I know you're in a rush, but it's not going to help you."
"Actually, I should thank you and your brother. Without you two meddling, Everett and I might've been done for good. But you pushed me right back to him."
"See, now I'm exactly where you wanted me—stuck with no choice but to fall into his arms."
Joy struggled to keep her cool, forcing herself to calm down. She set down the herbal tea and sat across from Selena. With a cold smile, she said, "Selena, do you really think you've won? You're back by Everett's side, but without any status or recognition. You seem so proud; it's laughable."
"You're in this society; you know how important a title is. Once divorced, you'll never have the chance to be Mrs. Bennett again. The future Mrs. Bennett will only be me!"
"Everett will definitely marry me. As for you, if you're okay with your kids being labeled illegitimate forever, I'll gladly oblige. That's my generosity as the rightful wife!"
