Mission: From Divorcee to Millionaire novel Chapter 880

Hearing those words, Everett's dark eyes deepened, his lips pressing into a thin line as he stayed silent. He worried that if he spoke, he'd only end up causing more harm.

Selena, exhausted and unwilling to argue any further, said coldly, "I'm heading to bed now. Please leave."

Everett's hand clenched tightly, but the tension eased when his gaze landed on her pale face. "Selena, I won't pressure you anymore, but... the kids need me, don't they?"

He'd spent time with the children, and they had grown attached to him, forming a bond that was hard to break.

"The kids need you, and you can be there for them. We can be friends, but that's as far as it goes."

Everett got the message. For the kids' sake, they could maintain a friendly relationship, but she wouldn't give him another chance, and he shouldn't expect more.

His heart was heavy with reluctance. The woman he loved was right there, so close. He could've held her tonight, shared all his longing and love. Instead, he was met with cold rejection. But he knew he couldn't push her any further.

Luckily...

They still had time on their side.

There was plenty of opportunity to mend their broken relationship.

After a moment, Everett finally turned and left, closing the door softly behind him. He lingered outside for a bit, not leaving immediately, and instead made his way to the kids' room.

As he entered, Mateo, who should have been asleep, opened his eyes and said softly, "Dad, did you get kicked out again?"

Everett paused mid-step. "..."

He sat down by the bed, giving his son's cheek a gentle pinch. "Why aren't you asleep?"

Mateo sat up, leaning against his dad like a little adult, and sighed, "It's because you're not trying hard enough, Dad. I'm worried about you."

Everett didn't know whether to be annoyed or amused. "You really are my son."
