Everett let out a laugh, as if he’d just heard the funniest joke in the world. But his eyes didn’t share in the laughter.

“Selena, do you honestly think that just because you give some explanation, I’ll just accept it, forgive you, and wrap you in my arms?”

“What on earth gave you the idea that you could toy with me like this?”

Selena took a moment, closing her eyes briefly. When she opened them, she met his gaze head-on.

“Everett, I can’t believe someone as smart as you couldn’t figure out why I did what I did.”

Her voice was steady and sure.

Everett nodded, acknowledging her point.

“Yeah, I get it. But so what? That night, we were one. You let me in, and I was over the moon. But then you turned around and hit me with a sucker punch.”

“You really think I didn’t notice you swiped my corporate and personal seals? I was just waiting, hoping you’d just be upfront about what you wanted, what you were planning. You think I would’ve stopped you?”

“But until we met in the detention center, you didn’t say a word. If you didn’t speak then, what’s the point now?”

Selena was feeling a bit rattled too. “Everett, didn’t you realize what was going on back then? We were being watched all the time. I didn’t want to take any risks.”

“Was it really about not wanting to take risks, or was it that you couldn’t fully trust me? You always think I can’t stay loyal, that I’d stray with someone else. Can you honestly say none of your actions were about having a backup plan?”

Everett’s words were sharp and hit where it hurt.

Selena’s face lost some color.
