Selena took the tissue, wiped away her tears, and took a deep breath to steady herself before heading out.
She had just stepped out of the conference room when Alex came over. Seeing Selena's tear-streaked face, Alex let out a soft sigh.
"Hey, can we chat for a sec?" Alex asked gently.
Selena paused, then nodded.
They found a quiet corner in the coffee shop downstairs. Selena was absentmindedly stirring her coffee, lost in thought.
Seeing her so downcast, Alex spoke up. "Don't be too hard on Mr. Everett. Do you know what he was doing when the police took him away?"
Selena looked up, curious.
"He was picking out a ring for you," Alex revealed.
"He realized he never gave you a proper proposal or wedding. Now that you’re planning a future together, he wants to make up for lost time," Alex continued. "He even asked for my help. He was so particular, going through the catalog. Even with all those fancy rings, nothing seemed good enough because he wanted the best for you."
"I've seen how far you both have come. It’s been a tough journey. Maybe you have your reasons, and Mr. Everett has made mistakes, but if you're starting fresh, shouldn't the past be left in the past?"
"If you keep holding onto yesterday, how can you ever walk into tomorrow together?"
Selena's eyelashes fluttered, absorbing Alex's words.
The thought of Everett picking out a ring and planning to propose was a surprise to her. She never imagined that after his heart transplant, he would be so sure about their relationship.
Once he made up his mind, he acted on it. That was something she hadn’t anticipated.
Holt grinned. "That's the way! You're fearless in everything else, so why not in love? Go on. I'll be here waiting for the good news."
The door was slightly open. She paused, took a deep breath, and tidied her hair and clothes. Despite the nerves, she felt like a young girl experiencing love anew.
Composed, she gently pushed the door open.
Before she stepped inside, she caught Everett’s voice on the phone.
"Alright, Mom, you handle the details. I'll be there tonight."
