Janet’s expression froze for a moment, and she instinctively became alert.
“Let go.”
She did not want to be in the same space together with him, not to mention that they were alone right now.
Nathaniel raised his eyebrows slightly and asked her with a bit of provocation, “Why should I?”
“I don’t want to be together with you. We hate seeing each other anyway. Feel free to go with another elevator, since there are so many of them,” Janet said as she reached out to press the button to close the doors.
However, Nathaniel had predicted her reaction, so he strode inside the elevator before she closed the door.
“I’m in a hurry, and this is the only one that has arrived,” he said indifferently.
Janet was so angry that she turned away and didn’t say anything. She thought, I’m so unlucky to bump into Nathaniel at the
hotel!
Before the doors closed, another pair of hands suddenly grabbed the doors. Then Alfred stepped into the elevator, panting, and said, “Mr. Webster, you walked way too fast…”
When he saw that Janet was also in the elevator, he suddenly stopped. Sensing the strange atmosphere between Janet and Nathaniel, he immediately changed the topic and smiled awkwardly to smooth things over.
“Oh, hey, Mrs. Webster, you are here as well… What a coincidence!”
His form of address made Janet frown even more.
With a straight face, she reminded Alfred, “Mr. Whitehead, you may call me Ms. Longfellow or Janet. I have nothing to do with Nathaniel. So, the address ‘Mrs. Webster’ is too much for me.”
Alfred was good at observing people’s expressions, so he immediately rephrased when he saw Janet was obviously unhappy. “Ms. Longfellow, are you here in Austin for … a business trip?” he asked tentatively on behalf of Nathaniel.
Alfred’s intuition told him that Nathaniel was very interested in the answer.
Nathaniel stood quietly in the corner of the elevator, looking casual. In fact, when Alfred asked the question, his eyes were
fixed on a spot.
Janet nodded and didn’t explain much, just saying, “I’m here for a meeting.”
There was much to tell about the Convention, yet she didn’t want Nathaniel to know about the Convention at all, and she didn’t think it was necessary to tell him.
Hearing her words, Alfred smiled and said, “Ms. Longfellow, you sound so busy. May I know which room you are staying in?”
As soon as he finished speaking, they arrived on the 16th floor. The elevator doors opened, and without answering him, Janet simply said, “It’s me. I’ll get going.”
After saying that, she stepped out of the elevator. However, not long after, she heard footsteps coming from behind her. Nathaniel and Alfred were not far behind her.
