No Remarriage for Us: Stay Away
Chapter 470 Do Not Want To See You
Lenora fell silent for a few seconds, a bitter smile gracing her lips. “You're right, I found out everything. It turns out Hattie is your biological daughter. No wonder she resembles you. It's funny how I never suspected a thing...”
“I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, Nora. I didn't mean to deceive you. I... I only found out yesterday that Hattie is my child...” Zachary's voice lowered, slightly hoarse.
“You and Isla... What's going on between you two?” Unable to hold back, Lenora asked softly.
The fact that she was willing to ask and find out more about the situation was far better than ignoring him.
Zachary hesitated before he spoke, “Nora, I swear, I didn't know her before... Six years ago, it was an accident...”
At a certain cocktail party during summer six years ago, Zachary suddenly felt unwell. Suspecting that he had been targeted in some way, he retreated to an upstairs room in the hotel to rest.
While he was in a dazed state, a woman appeared and had a sexual encounter with him.
When he woke up the following morning, he found himself alone in the bed.
Zachary had people investigate, but they found nothing. The woman from that night seemed as though it was just a dream of his.
After a long, fruitless search, he decided to set the matter aside. As time passed, it gradually slipped from his mind.
Just the day before, Tamara revealed to him that the woman from that night was none other than Isla.
She had come to Jacaster for a leisurely visit. During a banquet at the hotel, she mistakenly entered the wrong room, and by a twist of fate, she had a romantic encounter with Zachary, and a child was conceived.
After the incident, she was filled with fear and resentment. Without alerting Zachary, she fled from the hotel, intending to call the police. However, she was stopped by Tamara, who had learned of everything and rushed over.
Tamara did everything she could to soothe Isla, employing both threats and coaxing, while also promising to help her erase all traces of her past.
Back then, Isla had just turned twenty. Having grown up in a family that showered her with immense love and adoration, she was naive and inexperienced. She believed Tamara's words and immediately left Jacaster.
Several months later, Isla once again anxiously reached out to Tamara, who was in Lofbury. She confided that she had been so scared that she forgot to take her medication, and only now had she realized she was pregnant, but was too afraid to tell her parents.
Afterward, under the guise of studying abroad, Isla traveled to Lofbury, where she gave birth to Harrietta. The baby was left in the care of Tamara, while Isla herself returned to Fairlake.
From then on, the two never made contact again.
It was only until recently, in a certain bar in Fairlake, that Zachary and Tamara had a face-to-face conversation. It was then that Isla recognized Tamara and remembered that Zachary was the man from that night. It was at this point that she began considering acknowledging Harrietta.
Most of this information was relayed to Zachary by Tamara.
There might have been some deception involved, but the DNA test results were undeniable, aligning perfectly with the timeline of that night six years ago.
“That's pretty much what happened, Nora... You have to trust me, I have absolutely no feelings for Isla. It... It was truly just an accident...”
“It was indeed an accident, but against all odds, you two have a child...”
Had it only been a one-night stand, she wouldn't have struggled so much with the pain. After all, back then, their relationship was merely that of siblings in name.
Zachary gave a bitter smile. “That's why I don't dare to return. I don't know how to face you...”
Their child was lost and Lenora could no longer bear children.
Harrietta was clever and quick-witted, pure and adorable, and to top it off, was an orphan.
Adopting her was a highly beneficial arrangement for both parties involved.
But now, out of the blue, someone had come forward claiming that Harrietta was her biological daughter.
For Lenora, this was no doubt a severe blow.
“The reason you don't dare to come back to see me isn't because Hattie is your child, but because of your greed. You want me to accept Hattie and become her stepmother, to pretend as if nothing has happened and continue living harmoniously like before... Zachary, am I right?”
Zachary opened his mouth, intending to defend himself, yet he found himself utterly incapable of rebuttal.
She's right. I'm greedy, indeed.
He yearned for his beloved woman to stay by his side, and he was equally unwilling to give up on his dearly loved daughter.
Noticing the silence from the other end of the phone, Lenora tugged at the corner of her lips, saying, “You should go. I don't want to see you right now.”
“Nora...”
“Let's talk about it after I cool down.”
Lenora hung up the phone and placed it on the table. She leaned back against the couch, closing her eyes, her mind in turmoil.
Was she in love with Zachary?
Though she no longer saw him as the beacon of light in her dark world like before, she still loved him.
