Chapter 850
Third Person’s POV
Lance took another sip of his coffee, cracking a wide grin as he offered a genuine compliment. “I have to admit, Alpha–the coffee you’ve got here tastes incredible.”
Another half hour crawled by before Adelaide and Luna Hespere finally strolled back into the
room.
Lance stood up immediately, sliding a strong arm around Adelaide’s waist.
“We’ve got other business to attend to, so we won’t stick around for lunch. I assume I won’t have to make a second trip.”
Stanley could only manage a stiff nod as he stood to watch them leave.
Luna Hespere was miles more gracious, walking Adelaide all the way out to the territory’s main gates.
“Adelaide, I truly believe we’re going to be wonderful friends. Make sure you come back and visit me often.”
“Count on it,” Adelaide said with a warm smile, waving goodbye.
On the drive back, their carriage came to a sudden halt. Adelaide and Lance hopped out, instructing Caldwell and Beata to head back to the estate without them.
The couple took a slow, leisurely stroll down to the Stag’s Leap Tavern. Once inside a private VIP room, Lance quickly ordered a spread of Adelaide’s absolute favorite dishes along with a cask of Blackwood whiskey.
The second the whiskey hit the glasses, its rich aroma flooded the space. Lance raised his cup, letting out a bright, hearty laugh.
“The job’s done, and it’s finally the weekend. Let’s have a proper drink.”
Adelaide lifted her glass to clink against his, a playful smile on her face. “Drink as much as you want today. If you get completely wasted, I’ll carry you home on my back.”
Lance drained his glass with a chuckle and set it down.
He reached across the table, gently brushing the back of his knuckles against her cheek, his eyes full of a deep, endless warmth.

“If I get wasted, I’m taking you down to the lake. We can wait for the sun to drop and lie on the grass to watch the stars.”
She gave him a sweet, radiant smile. “Deal.”
“Sweetheart,” he murmured, his gaze locking onto hers as his voice dropped to a low whisper.
Adelaide looked up into those burning eyes, the endearment instantly making the tips of her wolf ears flush hot.
Her wolf gave a gentle, affectionate nudge against her ribs, her breathing softening without her even realizing it. “I’m right here.”
“I remember… back when we first formed our bond, you said it was a choice forced upon you by circumstance,” Lance said, his eyes reflecting a rare, piercing tenderness. “Did cheated by it?”
you feel
Back then, their union was essentially a political match. Adelaide had no real say in the matter.
“Then what about you?” Adelaide countered softly. “Did you feel cheated being my Alpha?”
He blinked, instantly shaking his head. “How could I ever feel cheated? There hasn’t been a single day where I regretted having you.”
Adelaide gazed at Lance, a profound warmth washing over her. Their mating bond surged, turning fierce and unbreakable–like two powerful currents that were always meant to collide, filling their chests to the brim.
“My mother always used to say she hoped my future mate would be a reliable, loyal Alpha. I think she’d be incredibly happy for me right now.”
Lance stared at her intently. “And what about you?”
“Me?” She picked up the flask and refilled his whiskey to the brim. “Alpha Lance–the ultimate. dream mate of every single she–wolf in the city–is my mate. How could I not be thrilled?”
Lance watched her, completely captivated.
“I always find myself needing to ask you, over and over… do you love me?”
Adelaide tilted her head, looking like she was turning it over in her mind. Seeing her keep her lips sealed, Lance pressed urgently.
“Adelaide, I love you fiercely.”

“I know,” Adelaide said, resting her chin on her hand as she blinked at him, her eyes dancing with sheer mischief.
Lance took a sharp breath, reaching out to cup her face in his hands, pulling her close enough that their breath brushed across each other’s skin.
Adelaide’s heart hammered against her ribs, a bright blush spreading across her cheeks. Her wolf let out a joyful cheer, practically begging her to throw caution to the wind and dive into
his arms.
“You’ll say the words sooner or later, I’m in no rush,” his voice anchored itself deep in her heart. “I have a lifetime to wait for you to say you love me.”
Adelaide gripped his sleeves tightly, her chest swelling with a wave of raw emotion and a sudden, quiet fear.
There was no doubt about it–she had fallen for him long ago. But the deeper her love grew, the more terrified she became of losing it.
If a day ever came where Lance left her side, or if he left this world before her, how was she supposed to face the emptiness?
Her eyes welled up with sweet, heavy tears. “Okay.”
He leaned his head in, finding the most sensitive spot at the crook of her neck, exhaling a soft breath that sent a shiver straight down her spine.
“I promise you. We will always be together.”
Back at the Styxwarden territory. Stanley flung his sleeve back in a violent motion, his voice cracking with pure rage.
“Have you completely lost your mind?! That Adelaide feeds you a couple of pretty lines and you swallow them whole? If Camilla actually goes public to back that Center, have you considered how much backlash she’s going to face?!”
Luna Hespere kept her back turned to him, calmly adjusting her jewelry.
“Then why did you feel the need to manipulate the press and attack the Center in the dark?”
Ever since the Julia Shuman disaster, her attitude toward Stanley had chilled significantly.
Stanley pressed his lips together, dodging the question, but his eyes darkened.
Luna Hespere continued smoothly, her voice level.

“Lycan Erasmus is still young, and he hasn’t locked down an official heir. You orchestrated this whole circus because you’re terrified Camilla’s children won’t secure the throne. Am I right?”
Having his deepest political anxieties dragged into the light by his own mate left Stanley with zero leverage to argue. He could only throw back a stiff, rigid defense.
“Bottom line–the Center offers zero political capital to Camilla. Keep your hands off this.”
Hespere remained completely unfazed.
“Camilla doesn’t even need to back it openly. She can get clearance from Lycan Luna Clarissa first, then quietly invest in the Center behind the scenes. Down the road, if Adelaide actually turns this non–profit into a massive success, it will do wonders for Camilla’s public image.”
She turned, giving Stanley a long, penetrating look.
“You know deep down that the Independent Center has a massive future ahead of it, don’t you?”
