Landon stares at me, worry written all over his face. “Delilah.”

“Mind your business.”

His brows furrowed, “I’m just trying to..”

“I said mind your fucking business,” he went quiet, and I gulped trying desperately to keep my voice steady, “you and I have nothing to do with each other, Landon.”

His expression shifted. “And I don’t want your crazy girlfriend thinking there’s still something going on between us.”

The words hung heavily between us, and judging by the look on his face, I’d finally managed to shut him up.

Though I had expected him to say something, anything. Probably something mean after I has called Sophie crazy. Instead, he just stares at me.

The worry in his eyes deepens, and then he steps closer, closing the small distance between us. “Oh my God, Delilah,” his voice softened, “You’re crying.”

I froze. “What?” my hand lifts instinctively to my cheek, my fingers came away wet.

Staring at them, my stomach dropping. I hadn’t even realized. Somehow, somewhere between walking away from Caelum and ending up in this classroom, the tears had escaped without my permission.

Fucking pathetic

And worse? Landon had seen it

I quickly wipe my face with the heel of my palm, scrubbing away the evidence, “Mind your business.”

Turning toward the door to leave, but Landon nod getting the damn memo, steps in in front of me, blocking my path.

“Move.”

“No.”

“Landon,” before I could say anything else, his arms wrapped around me and I stiffened, “what the hell are you doing?”

I pressed my hands against his chest, trying to create some distance between us, “Let me go.”

He didn’t. “I can’t, not when you’re like this.”

“I don’t need your fucking pity, I’m fine.”

“You’re obviously not.”

I tapped his chest again, “Let me go.”

Still, he held on. “I know how things have been between us,” he said quietly, “and I take responsibility for my part in that.”

My hands stilled against his chest, “I understand why you don’t want me around. I do,” his voice drops, “but I can’t just let you walk away when you’re like this.”

My fingers taps weakly against his chest again, but there wasn’t much strength behind them anymore.

My throat tightens, and eyes burns. Then another tear slips down my cheek and another, till I squeeze my eyes shut.

Fuck.

This was getting worse, I was getting worse. And the weaker my hands became against his chest, the more pathetic I felt for letting him see me like this.

I wanted to scream, wanted to beg for everything to stop. For the tears to stop and the ache in my chest to stop. For the fucking pain to stop.

It had been too fucking long

My life had always seem like one endless cycle of heartbreak, disappointment, and loss, and apparently, it wasn’t stopping anytime soon.

I just wanted to be happy, just once, only once

Was that really too much to ask?

Landon’s hand moved slowly up and down my back. “It’s going to be okay,” he murmurs, “I have no clue why you’re crying, but whatever it is, it’s going to be okay.”

I hated this, hated being in his arms. Hated that he’d seen me like this and hated that he was the one having to console me.

But most of all, I hated that the tears refused to fucking stop. Why wasn’t I stopping? Why was I crying so damn much?

I was beginning to get annoyed with myself.

This wasn’t me, I don’t do this, I don’t break down in hallways. I don’t allow myself to feel this much. So why had I?

Why had I allowed myself to open that door? I’d spent years believing that keeping my heart closed was the only way to avoid feeling like this.

And then, for the first time, I’d let someone in, I’d actually let myself feel, and this was what I got.

Pain wasn’t even the right word for it, pain didn’t do justice to this feeling.

I finally push gently away from Landon and he releases me, his eyes following me as I wipe my cheeks harshly with the back of my hand.
