sh through the hospital doors, my heart pounding so hard against my ribs that I could barely catch my breath. The sharp smell of antiseptic filles my lungs as I rush toward the nurse’s cubicle.

“Excuse me,” the nurse looks up, “I’m here for Jacquelin Moreno.”

She quickly check something on her computer. “Room 295, she is..”

I didn’t wait for her to finish..”thank you,” I turn, rushing down the hallway, my shoes echos/against the floor as I search for the room number, and my eyes darting from one door to another.

Reaching the stairs, I hurried up them, gripping the railing as I climbed the second floor, looking around,

Where was he..

I move down the hallway, checking the numbers on each door, then my steps suddenly slows and stopped. Someone was sitting on the floor a few feet ahead,, his back was pressed against the wall, his knees pulled toward his chest, his head hanging low between his arms.

Jace.

My heart clenches as I slowly walk toward him, stopping directly in front of him.

“Jace?” my voice came out softer than I intended and his head lift and my breath caught.

His eyes were swollen and red, tears still clinging to his lashes and streaking down his cheeks. His usually composed face was completely broken, his lips trembling as he struggls to breathe evenly.

He looked nothing like himself and instead looked like someone who had just lost a piece of his world, someone who had watch something precious slip away and had no idea how to put himself back together.

His chest rose unevenly, then he hiccups, “She’s..” his voice cracks and I crouches slightly in front of him.

“Jace..” he swallows, but another sob escaped him.

“She’s gone,” my heart drop as his eyes met mine, and whatever strength he’d been trying to hold onto finally disappears, “My mom..” he wiped desperately at his face, but more tears replaced the ones he had brushed away, “She’s gone, Delilah.”

| Tears already slipping down my cheeks and befor I could think about what to say, I wrap my arms around

him. One arm went around his neck, pulling him into me.

Jace grabs onto my arm tightly, his fingers trembling against my skin. “She’s gone,” he chokes out again, his voice broke completely, “My mom is gone.”

He buries his face against me, his body shaking, “She left me, Delilah.” His words came between uneven breaths, “What am I supposed to do now?”

My eyes burns as more tears fell ans I held him tighter, “I’m here,” I whisper, even though I knew those words weren’t enough.

Nothing could make this hurt less

There were no perfect words for losing someone you loved. No sentence I could give him that would magically fill the emptiness his mother had left behind.

So didn’t try and just held him. I held him while he cried, while my own tears soaked my cheeks. Held him because, right now, that was all I could give him.

I wasn’t sure how long we stayed like that, minutes, maybe hours. Maybe only seconds that felt impossibly long. Time seemed to disappear around us, eventually, Jace’s sobs grew quieter.

He stopped crying, but he didn’t move as he simply stayed in my embrace,, his breathing slowly evening out. I continued holding him till I felt his fingers weakly tap against my hand, causing me to loosen my

arms.

Jace pulls away slowly, wiping his face before placing one hand against the wall. Then he pushes himself upright, his legs looked unsteady as he uses the wall for support.

I stood too, except my body had been in the same position for so long that the moment I straightened, my legs nearly gave out causing me to stumble backward when a hand immediately caught me.

Freezing up for a second, then I slowly turn my head to find Elias standing behind me. My eyes widen a bit, wondering what he was he doing here and if he followed me.

I stare at him for a moment before noticing something else, his eyes. They were slightly red, not enough to miss. He had been crying too.

Our attention returned to Jace as he stood in the middle of the hallway, completely still, his head lowered as he stared at the floor. He looks lost, not just sad.

Elias took a cautious step toward him. “Jace.”

Jace’s head shot up as.gaze landed on Elias, but I wasn’t sure he was actually seeing him. His eyes looked distant, unfocus, like his mind was somewhere else entirely.

“I need to be with her,” he mumbles.

My heart tightens. “Jace..”

“I need to be with her,” he started walking, his steps were slow and uneven as he moved down the hallway. “She’ll be scared..I need to be with her so she doesn’t get scared.”

Elias turned and followed him. “Jace, listen to me,” but Jace kept walking.

“She’ll be cold,” his voice trembles, “I need to be with her. I need to be there.”

“Jace.” Elias caught up with him and reach for his hand it he immediately pulled away.

“No,” his voice was barely audible, “I need to go to her.”

He continuesforward, his steps becoming increasingly unsteady. I wipe at the tears slipping down my face as I watch him. He barely made it past the fourth before his balance gave out.

His body suddenly lurches backward. “Jace!” Elias and I rushed toward him at the same time, we caught him before he could hit the floor, his weight falling heavily between us.
