Chapter 49
I rolled onto my side for what had to be the hundredth me that night and stared at the wall, but sleep just woul happening. No matter how many times I closed my eyes, his vence keps finding, its way back into my head
It’s not like you have any logical explanation for your failure.
My jaw tightened as 1 squeezed my eyes shut, willing the memory away and surprisingly, no, it didn’t work, free me agatu one followed almost immediately
You lack responsibility
Groaning and buried my face into my pillow, seriously, did my brain have nothing better to do Apparefitly non, because the final comment came right after
Our time together was a mistake on my part
The words hit just as hard as they had when he had said it and I hated that more than that.. I hated that I was cull thinking
about it
Letting out an irritated huff I rolled onto my back and stared at the ceiling, the room was dark except for the faint dow of moonlight slipping through my curtains.
Everything was quiet in a way that left way too much room for thoughts, and unfortunately, all my thoughts seemed determined to revolve around one infuriating nerd.
Things ended, that was it, people stopped talking all the time, relationships ended, friendships ended, and whatever weird thing had existed between Caelum and me ended too
So why couldn’t my brain accept that and move og
I dragged a hand down my face, maybe it was because none of it made sense and still couldn’t understand how things had fallen apart so quickly. Or maye it some stupid part of me kept replaying, every conversation we had ever had, trying to figure out where everything went wrong.
“Stop thinking about things that aren’t relevant, Delilah,” mg voice sounded ridiculous in the empty room as I rolled onto my side again, “seriously, stop.”
Turning over again. “Go to sleep already,” a whole ten seconds passed before my thoughts drifted right back to the thing that had been bothering me all day.
The test
My eyes opened, and the more I thought about it, the less sense it made. I had been certain I knew what the answers to most of them were, and had studied them
Not my usual version where I had look at notes for fifteen minutes before giving up and deciding future me could deal with the consequences, I had genuinely put in the effort this time, remembered reviewing notes and going over examples, also answering questions exactly the way Caelum had taught me.
So how had I failed
The grade didn’t make sense, nothing about it did
I stared at the ceiling for another minute before finally throwing my blanket aside. “Fuck this.”
My feet hit the floor. If ouldn’t sleep. I might as well torture myself properly.

The test paper was sitting inside my desk drawer, exactly where I’d shoved it after getting home. I crossed the room and dropped into my chair as the drawer slid open and second later, I pulled the paper out. The giant failing grade at the top immediately annoyed me all over again.
Ugh..exactly what I needed before bed.
I flattened the paper on the desk and looked it over, this was definitely my handwriting, there was no doubt about that. Every answer was written in my handwriting, sentence looked like something I would write.
So why did it feel wrong?
Tapping the paper against the desk, I sighed. It was clear that I had completely lost my mind. I groaned’, dropping my forehead onto it, the paper crinkled beneath me as I stayed like that for several seconds.
Maybe if I hit my head hard enough, I would stop thinking. It was worth considering.
Eventually I lifted my head and slapped both cheeks lightly. “Get it together,” another slap, “go to sleep and stop thinking about the test., or a certain nerd who’s way too full of himself.”
Unfortunately, mentioning him only made me think about him more
My gaze drifted toward the window as my thoughts wandered back to earlier that day. I had been walking toward my locker when I spotted him leaning against the wall with a book in his hand.
Not surprising. I mean, the world could’ve been ending around him and he probably would’ve kept reading.
He looked completely focused on whatever was written on those pages, right untill Olivia walked by. My stomach tightened, even now, hours later, I could still picture it.
She had her violin strapped to her back and that same soft smile she always seemed to wear, and I hated admitting it.. but she looked beautiful. Not in the obvious way people usually talked about beauty, but there was just something peaceful about her.
Something warm
She looked happy, carefree, as if she existed in a completely different world from the rest of us, that even I felt calmer whenever she was around.
Olivia was everything Sophie pretended to be, the difference was that Olivia didn’t have to pretend, she was naturally kind, naturally gentlenans good.
and somehow that made it worse, because I understood why people liked her and were drawn to her. I understood why Caelum was drawn to her.
Against my better judgment, I remembered watching him, and the way his attention shifted the second she appeared as his eyes followed her. At the time, I could’ve sworn his pupils had dilated, the memory made my chest ache. I looked back /down at the paper.
Had he thought about Olivia when he read the books I’d given him? Had she been the girl in his head
Had he imagined her whenever we were together?
The questions came one after another. Had he thought about Olivia when he touched me? When he kissed me? When his hands had been all over me and he called me beautiful?
My throat tightened, because suddenly I wasn’t sure, when he said I was beautiful..had he actually meant me or had he been seeing someone else?
The thought hurt far more than I wanted to admit and I squeezed my eyes shut and shook my head.
