Chapter 61

He blinked, “You don’t even know what I was going to say.”

“And I don’t care to find out.”

“Can you at least hear me out..”

“No.”

“Kaia..”

She whipped around so fast he nearly walked into her. “I AM ON MY FREAKING PERIOD, ELIAS! MY UTERUS IS TRYING TO FIGHT GOD, MY BACK FEELS BROKEN, AND YOUR VOICE IS MAKING IT WORSE. TEST ME AGAIN AND I’LL HANG YOUR BALLS FROM THE CAFETERIA CEILING!”

The entire cafeteria went silent as tudents looked up from their trays, a freshman nearly dropped his fries, while someone at the next table snorted into their drink.

Every eye in the room was glued to Kaia as Elias wisely retreated a few steps, positioning himself behind my chair, causing me to raise an eyebrow.

What the fuck had he done this time?

Then Jace volunteered as tribute. “I mean…” he shrugged, “girls exaggerate periods all the time, don’t they?”

I physically cringed, beside me, Elias sighed. “He’s about to get folded.”

“Without a doubt.”

Kaia slowly looked at Jace, the smile she wore made me fear for his safety. “I’m sorry,” she said calmly, “when exactly did you grow a uterus?”

He frowned. “What?”

“I must’ve missed the announcement,” she took another step toward him, “because unless you’ve spent a week bleeding through your clothes while your organs practice mixed martial arts inside your body, keep your shit eating insect opinions to yourself,” the last sentence echoed through the cafeteria, making him nearly tripped over his own feet trying to put distance between them..

For one long second nobody spoke, then I started applauding and she shot me an approving grin. Within moments, several girls nearby joined in, clapping and laughing while a few boys quietly avoided eye contact.

Jace looked betrayed, “why are you cheering for her, she just threatened to mutilate someone.”

A girl from another table called back, “She had a point.”

I laughed at this before turning to face him. “I would sit this one out if I were you.”

Elias finally stepped away from his hiding spot. “No, seriously,” he said, “respect periods.” he pointed dramatically at Jace. “you exist because one happened.” He then turned to Kaia with the confidence of a man who hadn’t learned his lesson. “And for the record.” he rested a hand over his chest, “I would never disrespect Mother Nature’s monthly waterfall.”

I buried my face in my hands as Kaia stared at him. “That might actually be the dumbest thing you’ve ever said.”

He smiled proudly “I’ve said worse.”

“You have she grabbed her tray and shook her head, and a cocky grin spread across his face.

My attention drifted from then when a figure walked past our table, drum roll, Sophie.

She was carrying a tray balanced on one hand and surprisingly wasn’t with Landon and was instead chatting with a couple to girls from the cheerleading team like they had been friends for ages.

A smile instantly makes its way to my face again as I says. “Hey, Sophie.” She paused, her head turned toward me, “so good to see you.”

The conversation around our table died for a second but I didn’t mind and instead tilted my head, letting my smile widen just enough to seem genuine: “You’re looking really pretty today.”

She blinks, completely taken aback by my compliment and so did the other girls. “Thanks,” her answer came after the smallest hesitation as she studied my face as if waiting for the punchline, her grip tightening ever so slightly around her tray.

My smile brightens even more. “I love your outfit. It suits you.”

There was another pause. “Uh… thanks,” she shifted her weight awkwardly, “see you around.”

“See you.” I said sweetly as she gave me one last cautious glance before walking away.

The second she was out of earshot, Jace frowned. “That was weird.”

“What was?” I asked, stabbing another forkful of pasta.

“You’ve never voluntarily complimented Sophie before.”

I shrugged. “Maybe I felt like being nice.” the gave me a look that said he didn’t buy that, but he doesn’t push for more.

The conversation drifted to other things soon enough, or at least, everyone else’s did. Elias made a few half hearted attempts to get Kaia to acknowledge him, but she answered with nothing more than a hum, if she answered at all.

Jace, on the other hand, had no problem carrying a conversation, he launched into a story about one of his couch, waving his fork around as he spoke. Every now and then he would pull me into the conversation, asking for my opinion or trying to make me laugh but I wasn’t listening to any of it as my eyes found Caelum almost immediately. He was sitting a few tables over, leaning slightly forward as he talked to one of his over achievers, and I found myself getting irritated with how calm he looked, a total opposite to how I was feeling lately.

Reaching into my pocket and pulled out my phone, unlocking it before typing and sending. I didn’t look away from him while I did it and few seconds passed, then his phone buzzed on the table.

He paused mid sentence, slowly, he reached for it, taking just one glance. That was all it took to get his posture shifted immediately. His head lifted as his eyes found mine almost instantly, straight across the cafeteria.

I didn’t move at first and just held his gaze, trying not to smirk as I let letting him sit with whatever he’d just read.

The silence between us despite the noise around us…felt deliberate. His attention drifted briefly back to the guy he was talking to, and he says something low, something quick, clearly cutting the conversation short, then he stood.

My fingers tapped lightly against the edge of my tray. I tilted my head slightly toward my table, just enough to make it seem

casual.

“I’ll be right back.” I said smoothly, already pushing my chair back.

Jace barely looked up. “Where are you..”

“Bathroom,” I cut in lightly, grabbing my bag before anyone could question it further. He gave a hum and turned to talks to Elias who was still getting ignored by Kaia.

No one paid me a second glance as I wove through the maze of tables, weaving between students carrying trays and those still searching for empty seats

The cafeteria doors swung shut behind me, muffling the chatter into a distant buzz, the hallway was quiet. I stopped just outside the entrance, letting my gaze travel in both directions. Thankfully it was empty.

Satisfied, I took another step before lifting my eyes toward the security camera mounted high in the corner, the old security cameras had never worried me, they were outdated, fixed in place, and only watched the rows of lockers, classroom entrances, and the main doors. As long as we stayed out of their view, no one would know we were there.

I eased the storage room door closed behind us. “Are you sure this is a good idea?” Caelum asked in a low voice, “If we’re gone too long, someone’s going to start asking questions.”

The room was barely large enough for the two of us, his height alone made the space feel even smaller.

Reaching up, I grab him by his shirt, pulling him closer. “Then quit worrying,” my lips connect with his, and I could tell he likes the new raspberry lip gloss I started to use when he tries to kiss me harder.

His body is hard against mine but his lips are soft. I feel addicted to them and how they move against mine perfectly.

I pulled back slightly as my eyes drifted to his hair. “You had it cut.”

He rubbed the back of his neck. “Yeah,” combing my fingers through the shorter strands.

“I liked it better before.”

“You did?”

I nodded. “It suited you and it makes it easier to pull,” a shy smile crossed his face.

“I won’t cut it again.” his eyes look desperate for me to kiss him again and I tease his bottom lip with my index finger. I braced my hands on his chest, leaning up to reach his neck, and began to mark my lips on his sensitive spot.

He raised his head to give me better access, I could feel his body heat against mine as he let out a small groan and I covered his mouth when we heard footsteps echoed down the hallway.
