Chapter 64

“I think you guys are getting way too close, don’t you think?”

I didn’t even bother looking up from my phone as we made our way down the hallway. “Its just dinner with his family.”

“Yeah,” Kaia said, and I could feel her gaze drill hole on the side of my face, “with his family, Delilah. His family.”

Sighing, my gaze drifted up only for breif second just to make sure there wasn’t anyone in front of me, before saying. Its not a big deal. His mum asked to stay for dinner and she was being really persistent, and also nice about it that I couldn’t bear breaking her heart by saying no.”

“Yeah, right,” shs folded her arm. “Sure,” her voice suggest she didn’t believe my words and I fight the urge to roll my eyes as she continues. “You dated Landon for nearly two years and barely had a conversation with his mother; not to talk of dinner/ with his parent.”

“Your point.

“My point is, you didn’t put an effort in getting to know Landon’s parent.”

“Because they were never around.”

“Yet somehow you’ve had dinner with Caelum and his parent after..” she pauses, pretending to count, “what? Two months?”

“Two months and four weeks.” the correction slipped out before I even realized I had said it, and Kaia slowly turned to look at me again, this time raising a brow. I offered an awkward smile. “Not that anyone is counting.”

She continued staring, without saying anything, so I cleared my throat. “So…” I said, putting my phone away. “You were saying?”

Thankfully she let out a small laughs before shaking her head. Honestly, I blame all this on Caelum, he was the one who went all mathematically genius during our dinner with his parent. Now I found myself counting also the weeks since our first deal.

“As I was saying,” Kaia continued, snapping me out of my thoughts. “You barely know Caelum for two months and you are already having dinner with his family,” she gesture dramatically with both hands.

“At this point, I’d say you two are more than just two people tied together by some tutoring slash other things deal, deal.”

I rolled my eyes, “you’re reading way too much into it.”

“Or..” she countered, taking a step closer, “you’re trying really hard to downplay everything because you’re terrified of admitting that maybe you and Caelum are more than what you’ve been telling yourself.”

Letting out a small subtle snorted. “Once again..” turning to look at her, “you’re thinking too much.”

She studied me for another second before giving a small shrug. “If you say so,” I smiled to myself, knowing she wasn’t convinced in the slightest. “Oh, right,” she snapped her fingers, “how did it go with your car?”

Letting out a quiet sigh. “It worked out, thankfully. I always keep more than one spare tyre in my trunk, so all I had to do was find someone to help me change it.”

“That’s good,” she nodded before her expression hardened, “I still don’t get Sophie, though.”

Neither did I

“mean” Kata continued “you already gave her Landon, wasn’t that what she wanted in the first place? Now that she has ham, why is she still so determined to get under your skin?”

“Beats me.” I shrugged, “I’ve made my peace with everything, what she chooses to do from here is up to her.”

She raised an eyebrow. “So…you’re not planning on retaliating?”

Shaking my head. “Nope,” but she waited, still not convinced. “I’m serious, there is no retaliation, nothing, nada,” I smiled faintly, “like I said, I’ve made my peace with it. Sophie is more than welcome to do whatever she wants, I don’t plan on chasing after Latidon or coming between them.”

She watched me for a long moment before speaking again. “As happy as I am to hear you’re not going after Landon..”

Raising a brow. I turned to her. “Whatever do you mean?” I asked, feigning offence, “I thought you liked me being with Landon.”

She scoffed so loudly a couple of students walking past glanced our way. “I tolerated you being with Landon.”

I laughed. “Oh, that’s nice.”

“I’m serious,” she pointed at me, “did I support you because you’re my best friend? Yes. Did I ever think the two of you made sense together?” she answered her own question with a firm shake of her head, “absolutely not.”

“And why not?” I asked, amused.

“Because he’s too..” she paused, searching for the right word, “Unsettled.”

I frowned. “Unsettled?”

“He never knows what he wants,” she waved a dismissive hand, “one minute he’s all about you, the next he’s looking over the fence to see if the grass is greener somewhere else.” I couldn’t exactly argue with that. “I would say he found the perfect match in Sophie.” she finished. “They’re both exhausting.”

A laugh escaped me before I could stop it, but didn’t say anything in response, because, honestly…she wasn’t wrong. Landon had always been uncertain, always second-guessing, looking for the next thing.

Indecisive

And maybe that was why everything had fallen apart in the first place

We reached Kaia’s locker a few moments later, and she reached into her pocket for the combination before stopping mid-

motion.

“Huh?” I looked up, spotting a single red rose had been taped neatly to the front of her locker, as she frowned. “What on earth?”

She carefully peeled the tape away, turning the flower over in her hand, and we exchanged a confused look. “Did someone lose a bet?” I asked.

“I was just about to ask you the same thing,” still holding the rose, she spun the dial on her locker and pulled the door open. The moment she did, a folded envelope slipped out and fluttered onto the floor.

Our eyes followed it down as she bent to pick it up. It was a cream colored envelope, with the edges decorated with tiny red and pink hearts, and a small wax red heart sticker held it closed, written neatly across the front was just one word.

She looked down both ends of the hallway, nothing, just a few students walking past without paying us any attention.

“No one’s watching,” I murmured.

“Or they’re pretending not to,” she shot me a look before carefully peeling open the envelope. Inside was a small cream card

with the same little heart pattern around the border.

Then she unfolded it as I leaned in beside her.

Your smile has a way of making even the busiest hallway feel brighter. Whoever wins your heart one day will be the luckiest person in school.”

Her brows furrowed at this as she read through the words again. “Wow,” I said, unable to hide my grin, “looks/like someone” has a secret admirer.”

A blush immediately spread across her cheeks. “No.”

“Yes,” she looked frantically down one side of the hallway, then the other, searching every passing face as though the mystery writer might suddenly step forward.

I found myself looking too, but there was nothing, not even a suspicious glance. Whoever had left it had made sure they were long gone.

Kaia carefully folded the letter again before placing it, along with the rose, inside her locker. She reached in for the history book she’d originally come for and closed the door.

When she turned around. I was still smiling, her eyes narrowed at me as she slowly raised a finger. “Don’t.”

“I didn’t even say anything.”

“You don’t have to,” she pointed at me again, “I can see the look in your eyes.” I bit the inside of my cheek, trying and failing not to smile wider. “No teasing,” she warned.

I raised both hands in surrender. “Fine,” she looked at me suspiciously for another second, then I asked, “Do you have any

idea who left it?”

Letting out a sigh and shook her head. “No clue,” she gave the locker door a light push to make sure it was shut, “Not sure I want to know.”

Raising a brow at her. “You make it sound like having a secret admirer is a bad thing,” bitting at her lower lips, her gaze dropping briefly to the locker where she’d tucked away the rose and letter.
