A Mix-up Made Me His Enemy's Woman novel Chapter 24

Chapter 24

The following day, Antonio summoned Bethany to his office and asked, Beth, I heard you had a runin with William yesterday.

Bethany smiled gently. Did he tattle, Uncle Antonio?

Antonio didn’t expect her to be so blunt, and it threw him off for a moment. Oh, no. I heard it from someone else. Even if work in the HR department isn’t exactly hectic, maintaining a good team dynamic is still important. Beth, you were parachuted into the position, so it’s natural for people to have opinions.

However, Bethany didn’t back down. Uncle Antonio, first of all, if he really tattled to you, that’s jumping the chain of command. Many companies, especially foreign ones, hate that. Second, if he hadn’t, it meant that I handled things just fine.

She paused, then added calmly, This is a company, Uncle Antonio. There’s room for all kinds of people here, but what a company needs are people who follow orders well, right?

Antonio seemed surprised. He hadn’t expected his 25yearold niece to say something like that.

His gaze turned dark. It looks like you’ve put in quite a bit of work this time, Beth.

Not really.Bethany flashed a smile. Uncle Antonio, the company wouldn’t have grown from a single hotel into a whole chain without everything you’ve invested in it. I came back to see the business my dad builtand to help the company keep moving forward. We want the same thing.

Her words gave Antonio a quiet satisfaction. Mm, Beth. I can tell you really care.

As for William, that was the end of it.

William assumed that by spreading those rumors, he would at least cause Bethany some trouble.

However, when he saw her return to the office completely unfazed and start posting this month’s task assignments in the group chat, he began to panic.

Did his performance bonus really get docked for nothing?

Bethany ignored William completely, treating him as if he were invisible.

There were plenty of staff who could work. She didn’t have to ask William for help.

At noon, Holly unexpectedly called Bethany.

She suggested, Beth, let’s go camping tomorrow. It’s been ages since we last went out for some fun!

Bethany mulled it over. It was Saturday tomorrow, so her schedule should be wide open. Thus, she said, Sure, count me in.

The two of them settled on a time. Holly offered to pick her up, and Bethany didn’t think much about it.

The following day, when Noah’s familiar car rolled to a stop at their meeting spot, Bethany pressed her lips together, her expression unreadable.

Beth, hop in!Holly invited warmly.

She was here that day to be the peacemaker.

Bethany had previously had a bit of a misunderstanding with Noah, which is why Holly arranged this meeting.

Most of the people who were going that day were Noah’s friends. So, Holly figured that it wouldn’t be awkward if she brought Bethany and another friend along.

Bethany was reluctant to join them. Yet, Noah gave her a taunting look and snarkily remarked, Why? Ms. Porter, am I your enemy now that you’ve resigned?
