Chapter 27
In the car, Holly finally felt a flicker of fear for having brought her best friend along in Noah’s rival’s car.
She flashed an awkward smile. “Mr. Brennan, you can drop us off In the city. We can grab a ride ourselves there.”
Silas glanced at the rearview mirror. “It’s fine. I can drop you off at home first, then your friend.”
Thinking that Silas and Bethany didn’t know each other, Holly quickly introduced, “Oh, she’s my best friend, Bethany Porter. She lives closer, so let’s drop her off first.”
Silas shot a look at Bethany, who was still dazed in the backseat. A faint smirk played on his lips. “What do you think, Ms. Porter?”
Bethany finally snapped back to reality and caught Silas‘ hint. She said, “Mm, let’s drop you off first, Hols.”
Holly pouted. “Okay, then. Thank you, Mr. Brennan.”
She didn’t pick up the tension simmering between Bethany and Silas.
With Silas present, Holly couldn’t speak her mind. So, she texted Bethany instead.
Holly texted, “Sorry, Beth. I tried to help, but only made things worse! I promise I won’t act on my own again.”
“I had no idea that Uncle Noah would do that. He really would do anything for Ella! How annoying.
“Beth, will you forgive me?”
After reading Holly’s three texts in a row, Bethany chuckled softly and replied, “I’m not mad, but you shouldn’t act on your own again. I don’t want to see Mr. Vazquez ever again. Can you give me your word, Hols?”
Holly replied, “Of course! I’m glad you’re not mad at me. Fortunately, Silas showed up just in time. Otherwise, we would’ve fallen into their trap!”
Hearing their phones buzzing one after another, Silas suddenly spoke. “You two aren’t texting each other to gossip about me behind my back, are you?”
Holly gaped in surprise. She said, “Of course not, Mr. Brennan. I was texting my other friend, not Beth.”
Bethany pursed her lips and looked up, her eyes catching his dark gaze in the rearview mirror.
Feeling awkward, she looked away. “No. I’m also texting my friend, Mr. Brennan.”
Soon, Holly arrived home. She reluctantly stepped out of the car and said, “Beth, I’m home. Remember to text me when you get home.”
“Okay.”
