Chapter 28
Bethany ultimately gave in to Silas‘ intense stare. She unbuckled her seatbelt in the backseat and reluctantly slid into the passenger seat.
After closing the door, she glanced at Silas. “Thanks for today.”
Silas suddenly smiled and didn’t hold back. “You really owe me one today. If I hadn’t shown up, were you actually planning to apologize to that little bitch?”
Hearing him referring to Ella as a “little bitch“, Bethany felt strangely satisfied. “I wasn’t planning on apologizing to her.”
Silas scoffed. “Good, then. I almost thought you were the type to let people push you around without retaliating.”
Bethany lowered her head and stared at her hands resting on her knees. “I’m not that kind of person.”
Silas‘ crisp cedar scent suddenly drew closer. He leaned in, his knuckles brushing her lower abdomen. Bethany froze.
Noticing her tension, Silas smiled as he pulled the seatbelt over her body and secured it with a click.
His gaze flicked to her flushed ears. “Afraid that I’ll eat you up? Don’t worry. I was just helping you fasten the seatbelt.”
Bethany’s face turned red. She couldn’t even bring herself to look at him.
Silas knew better than to push her too far. So, he simply eased a foot onto the gas pedal and continued driving.
Bethany noticed that he was heading toward her home. She glanced at her watch and told him, “Just pull over and drop me off. I’m going to the nursing home to visit my grandma.”
Silas‘ expression shifted slightly. “Where is it?”
Bethany gave him a name. Silas then pulled up the navigation page. “I’ll come visit her with you. After all, I’m technically her grandson–in–law now.”
Bethany was at a loss for words. However, she couldn’t refuse him and could only let him tag along.
When the car arrived at the nursing home, it drew quite a few curious glances, especially from the staff.
When they saw Bethany getting out of the car, they could barely hide their surprise.
“Beth, did you get a new car?”
Silas got out of the driver’s seat and wrapped an arm around Bethany’s shoulder. “Hello, I’m Beth’s husband.”
“You got married, Beth? Oh, this is wonderful news!”
“Sarah would be delighted to learn that!”
Bethany nodded slightly. Feeling awkward, she instinctively shifted away from him. Instead of letting go, Silas pulled her even closer.
“Relax, Mrs. Brennan. You don’t want your grandma to see through your act, do you?”
Left with no other choice, Bethany had to let him lead her into Sarah’s room.
Sarah had just woken up. The caregiver helped her onto the wheelchair and was just about to take her for a walk in the garden when Bethany arrived.
“Beth?” Sarah was both surprised and delighted.
When she saw the man standing next to Bethany, she seemed confused. “Beth, is that your husband? Why does he look different from the photo you showed me?”
