Chapter 57
Silas carefully laid Bethany down on the bed. “Sorry, I shouldn’t have driven so fast. It won’t happen again. I’ll have Jane make you some chicken noodle soup.”
He turned to leave and soon came back holding a box of medicine. “I just consulted the doctor. Taking this will help ease your discomfort.”
He placed the pills in his palm and held a glass of water in front of her. “Want me to feed you?”
Bethany pressed her lips together and took the pills from him. She placed them in her mouth, took a sip of water, and swallowed them.
“Thank you.”
Silas didn’t leave after she’d taken her meds. Instead, he watched her finish her drink of water and fixed his gaze on her face.
Bethany felt a little uneasy under his gaze. She cleared her throat and said, “I’m going to sleep.”
After lowering her eyes to avoid his burning stare, she mumbled, “I didn’t think you were dirty. It’s just that… That was my first kiss.”
Silas‘ tense jaw instantly softened.
He suddenly rested his palm on the side of her bed.
His smile deepened, and his eyes darkened with intensity as he said, “What a coincidence. Me too.”
The next day, Bethany woke up with her cheek still warm to the touch.
She didn’t quite understand Silas‘ “me too” remark.
Did it mean that despite Silas‘ reputation as a playboy with many boyfriends, he was actually a hopeless romantic?
No, Bethany wouldn’t believe a word a man said.
Coincidentally, Holly invited her to go shopping that day. And not wanting to be alone, Bethany agreed.
“Beth, I’m sorry about what happened last time. I’ll buy you a bag to make it up to you, okay? I feel really bad.”
Bethany smiled helplessly. “It’s okay. It’s all in the past now, so you don’t need to buy me anything.”
But Holly insisted so relentlessly that Bethany thought she could perhaps just pick a purse instead.
As soon as they entered the store, an awkward encounter unfolded.
Bethany’s smile faded.
Ella, linking arms with Noah, stepped forward with a fake smile on her face. “Beth, Hols, what a coincidence it is to see you
here.”
Noah’s eyes darkened as he found himself staring at the face he’d been missing day and night without even realizing it.
Seeing that dazed look on his face almost made Ella grind her teeth in anger.
She deliberately stirred the pot, saying, “Beth, Mom came home crying for a long time yesterday. Did you accidentally upset her again?”
Holly, unaware of Ella and Bethany’s relationship, was confused. “Mom?”
Bethany’s expression remained cool. “Hols, can we go to another store?”
