Silas was right. Bethany had used to be such a pushover. After all, most of what Otis and Sarah taught her was to endure and

lie in wait.

They would say things like “Just bear with it for a moment. It’ll pass eventually” and “Just wait for a bit more. Your mom will be here to pick you up soon“.

As such, Bethany had been enduring and waiting all this time. But now, she was done.

Holly didn’t know what was wrong with Bethany. The moment she turned around, she chased after her, not caring about Noah and Ella.

Behind them, Ella was fuming, but she still put on a weak and innocent front. “Noah, I don’t know what’s gotten into Beth recently. She’s so bad–tempered-”

Before she could finish, Noah interrupted her. “Ella, you shouldn’t have talked to her like that. If she’s fighting with the family, she’s probably more upset than you are. Besides, there was nothing between me and her. You misunderstood.”

Ella was stunned to hear this. She didn’t expect Noah to defend Bethany. “I’m sorry, Noah.”

Noah’s eyes darkened. “You should be apologizing to her, not me.”

Meanwhile, Bethany had no idea that Noah was speaking up for her for the first time ever.

All she felt was a heavy weight in her chest. She didn’t want to see them or maintain any so–called peace, even if just for optics.

Holly cautiously walked beside Bethany. When the latter stopped, she tentatively asked, “Beth, are you okay?”

Bethany took a deep breath and turned to Holly. “Hols, there’s something I’ve been hiding from you. Noah and I were in a secret relationship for three years.”

Holly’s heart skipped a beat, and her mouth fell open in shock. She had never thought to put those two together.

“Remember last month when you called me about him having a girlfriend?” Bethany let out a bitter laugh before adding,

That’s when I found out I was cheated on.

“And you’re probably wondering about my relationship with Ella. She’s my mom’s stepdaughter from her remarriage—her husband’s child. My mom has always favored Ella over me, but that’s fine. I don’t expect her love anymore.”

“Beth…” Holly’s eyes watered. Just hearing bits of this told her how much pain Bethany had been holding in.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t know about your relationship with Uncle Noah. If I’d known, I never would’ve made so many stupid

mistakes.”

Holly recalled how many times she had dragged Bethany into gatherings where Noah and Ella were present.

It must have been painful for Bethany to watch them act so close to each other.

The worst incident had been the last camping trip. Ella and Noah had clearly teamed up against Bethany.

Holly felt so stupid now. If Bethany hadn’t told her about it today, she’d still be in the dark.

“Beth, scold me and hit me all you want. I’m so sorry.” Holly was almost pleading now.

Bethany smiled softly. “Silly, why would I hit you? You didn’t know anything. Besides, it’s my fault for not telling you.”

Holly hugged her tightly. “Beth, if you want to cry, you can always lean on my shoulder.”
