Bermu City.
Jared and Gwendolyn wandered through the city streets.
Shops lined both sides in dense rows, and vendors called out one after another.
There were pill sellers, arcane implement shops, spirit material stalls, and merchants selling all kinds of rare items.
Cultivators moved through the streets in steady streams. Some wore fine sect robes. Others were dusty wandering cultivators who had clearly traveled from far away.
There were also cultivators of the Abyssal Exchange in silver robes, setting up stalls at street corners with strange and unusual goods arranged in front of them.
Gwendolyn wore a simple white dress. Her long hair was loosely pinned with an ice-blue hairpin. Her face had been disguised to look more ordinary, but her icy-blue eyes remained clear and captivating.
Many male cultivators stared at her.
Some looked as if they wanted to swallow her whole.
"These men are disgusting," Gwendolyn said, clearly displeased. "They keep staring."
"This is after the disguise," Jared said. "Without it, they would be drooling all over the street. Who told you to be that beautiful?"
Gwendolyn smiled at once.
"You think I am beautiful too?"
"Of course." Jared nodded honestly. "If you were not beautiful, I would not have slept with you."
"Jared!" Her face turned red. "How can you say something that crude in public?"
"That is crude?" Jared smiled. "I have not even said fvck yet."
Gwendolyn blushed harder and stopped talking to him. She quickened her steps.
They continued strolling for a while.
"Bermu City is much larger than Ashford Hollow," Gwendolyn said softly.
"Yes."
Jared nodded. "A city in the Nineteenth Firmament is not something the Eighteenth can compare with. There are more cultivators here, and trade is much livelier."
His gaze swept across the stalls on both sides of the street.
He observed the cultivation levels of the people in the city while quietly monitoring the fluctuations of aura around him.
Ever since he destroyed the four forces, he had known that he had become the focus of Bermu City.
Countless eyes watched him from the dark.
Some were curious.
Some respectful.
Some greedy.
Some hostile.
He could feel one gaze following him from the moment he left the City Lord's estate.
That aura was deeply hidden.
If he had not cultivated chaotic force and become extremely sensitive to everything around him, he would not have noticed it.
The owner of the aura was very strong.
At least Golden Immortal Level Eight.
His presence was restrained perfectly, like a venomous snake lying low in the shadows, following quietly.
A barely visible curve touched Jared's lips.
Golden Immortal Level Eight.
Stronger than any opponent he had faced so far.
He did not turn around.
He did not walk faster.
He kept strolling with Gwendolyn as if he had noticed nothing.
Gwendolyn also sensed that gaze. She was about to look back when Jared gently took her hand and shook his head.
"Do not turn around."
His voice was so low only she could hear it.
"Someone is following us. Golden Immortal Level Eight."
Gwendolyn's pupils contracted slightly.
She recovered almost at once.
She did not look back. She only tightened her hold on Jared's hand and kept walking.
The scar-faced man's voice rolled down the street like muffled thunder. "You came to Bermu City and planned to leave without even saying hello? That is not showing much respect to me, Cole Ironside."
The tracker finally revealed himself.
He was a thin middle-aged man in tight black combat clothes. His face was ordinary, without any memorable feature. He was the kind of man who could vanish in a crowd and never be found again.
But his eyes were extremely sharp, like a hawk's.
Deep in his pupils, a faint golden light flickered.
Golden Crow clan.
Jared recognized it immediately.
That golden light was a sign of the Golden Crow bloodline.
A Golden Immortal Level Eight assassin from the Golden Crow clan.
Blackraven.
Blackraven looked at Cole Ironside. His expression did not change, but his eyes grew serious.
"Cole Ironside. Since when did you become captain of the City Guard?"
His voice was cold, like ice.
"I remember you used to be a wandering cultivator in Bermu City. You never cared about other people's business."
"That was before."
Cole grinned, showing white teeth. "Now is now. By the City Lord's order, from today onward, the Bermu City Guard is responsible for Mr. Chance's safety. Anyone who dares act against him inside Bermu City is an enemy of the City Guard."
His gaze settled on Blackraven, and the chill in his eyes was undisguised.
"Blackraven, you are an assassin of the Golden Crow clan. You sneaked into Bermu City and followed Mr. Chance. What were you planning? Assassination? Intelligence gathering?"
Blackraven's mouth curved into a cold line.
"Cole Ironside, are you sure you want to meddle? You should know the weight the Golden Crow clan carries in the Nineteenth Firmament. Offend us, and will your seat as captain of the City Guard still be stable?"
Cole laughed loudly, full of boldness.
"Whether my seat is stable is not for you to decide. But you, Blackraven, are now suspected of plotting against an honored guest of Bermu City. Come with me."
The moment he finished, the other two guards moved from the left and right.
Chains whipped through the air in two silver arcs, winding toward Blackraven's neck and wrists.
