Blackraven's figure blurred, fast enough to become a streak of black shadow.
He tried to slip between the two guards and escape their encirclement.
Cole Ironside was faster.
His longblade came out of its sheath.
A cold white blade-light flashed in the sun and cut off Blackraven's retreat.
"Do not move."
Cole's voice turned cold. "My blade is not good at telling friend from foe once it comes down."
Blackraven's pupils tightened slightly.
He stopped.
He could feel Cole's blade force locking onto his aura. One more move, and that strike would fall.
Blackraven was Golden Immortal Level Eight, one minor realm above Cole.
But this was Bermu City.
He did not dare truly attack the City Guard here.
If he did, the matter would no longer be a quiet tailing job.
"Cole Ironside, remember what you did today," Blackraven said, his voice cold as ice. "The Golden Crow clan will remember too."
"Save it."
Cole waved a hand. "Take him away."
The two City Guard members stepped forward and fastened chains around Blackraven's wrists and neck.
Restraining arrays covered the chains. Once locked, they cut off the captive's spiritual power and reduced him to the strength of an ordinary man.
Blackraven did not resist.
He knew Bermu City would not dare kill him.
As the guards escorted him past Jared, he turned his head.
For one brief moment, his gaze met Jared's.
There was no anger in his eyes.
No threat on his face.
Only a deep calm that made the skin crawl.
It was like watching a beast placed behind bars for now, quietly studying the prey it planned to kill later.
Jared met his eyes without the slightest change in expression.
"You are Jared?" Blackraven asked softly, so softly only Jared could hear.
"Yes," Jared said.
"You were lucky. Bermu City saved you today." Blackraven's voice was flat. "But you will not hide in this city forever."
Jared smiled faintly.
"I will wait."
Blackraven said nothing more.
The City Guard took him away.
Cole sheathed his blade and walked to Jared. He cupped his hands.
"Mr. Chance, I am Cole Ironside, captain of the Bermu City Guard. The City Lord has ordered that from today onward, anyone who acts against you inside Bermu City will be treated as an enemy of the City Guard.
"That man was Blackraven, an assassin of the Golden Crow clan. He is Golden Immortal Level Eight. He was following you to learn your movements and background."
Jared looked at him calmly.
"Thank City Lord Whitmoor for me."
Cole grinned.
"You are too polite, Mr. Chance. The City Lord said you are an honored guest of the estate. While you are in Bermu City, the estate will be responsible for your safety.
"Walk around as you please. With us here, no one will dare touch a hair on your head."
Jared nodded.
Cole cupped his hands again, then left with the City Guard.
Gwendolyn came to Jared's side. A grave look filled her icy-blue eyes.
"The Golden Crow clan has found us."
"Yes." Jared nodded. "A Golden Immortal Level Eight assassin. Corvin Skyreach truly wants me dead."
"May I ask where everyone is going?"
The man wore a gray robe and looked like a wandering cultivator. His cultivation was Golden Immortal Level Four.
At first, he looked annoyed at being stopped.
Then he noticed Jared's unusual bearing and the cold, elegant woman beside him. His tone softened.
"You must be new here. A treasure tower appeared about thirty miles outside Bermu City. People say it is full of rare treasures. Pay the entrance fee, go in, and search. With good luck, you can get rich overnight."
"A treasure tower?" Jared's brows drew tighter. "What does it look like?"
"Just... a tower."
The man thought for a moment. "It is very tall, dozens of floors at least, and there is mist around it, so you cannot see it clearly. It feels like something drifting in from another world. Everyone is saying an ancient ruin has appeared."
Jared nodded.
"How much is the entrance fee?"
"One hundred supreme-grade crystals. Not that expensive, right? If you find even one real treasure, you make it back."
After saying that, the man hurried toward the city gate.
Jared remained where he was.
A vague memory moved through his violet eyes.
A misty tower.
An entrance fee of one hundred supreme-grade crystals.
Treasures inside.
Why did that sound familiar?
"Want to take a look?" Gwendolyn asked.
"Yes." Jared nodded. "We have nothing else to do anyway."
They followed the crowd out of Bermu City and headed toward the place roughly thirty miles away.
Once outside the gate, the crowd became even denser.
Cultivators came from every direction toward the same destination. Some walked. Some flew. Some rode spirit beasts.
It was as lively as a festival.
