A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1061

Starla wasn't joking. Fairfax knew it.

"You'd better not try to force me, or I'll be dead by the time you hand me back. And Yardley Hoggart will slaughter the entire Yelchin family!"

Even though Yardley's current attitude broke her heart, if she returned as a corpse, the consequences would be catastrophic. Alive, they had leverage. Dead, it was a different game entirely.

Fairfax felt a suffocating weight in his chest. He didn't doubt for a second that Starla would follow through. He didn't dare force her.

She left. Left alone, Fairfax irritably lit a cigarette and took a drag. No one knew how much pressure he was under; he felt like he was losing his mind.

She didn't just want Xenia back in prisonโ€”she wanted Xenia dead. Both were his sisters. Starla had handed him an impossible dilemma. No one could make that choice.

Amos walked in and saw him smoking. It was obvious he'd fought with Starla. It'd be weird if they hadn't.

Amos had no desire to deal with him and turned to leave.

Fairfax spoke up. "Tell Yvonne to go see her."

"For what?" Amos's tone was instantly defensive. Was he kidding? Tell Yvonne to see Starla? It was obvious what Fairfax was plotting: he'd hit a wall with Starla and wanted Yvonne to act as a mediator.
